The weather gods smiled down on the Third Annual Mustang Classic Aug. 11, as the heat and humidity that has blasted the region took a break providing for the perfect setting for the event, which raises money for Putnam Science Academy’s athletic programs.
“We couldn’t have asked for better weather,” said Heather Stewart, PSA’s dean of Marketing whose team was instrumental in putting the day together.
“And everyone had a great time. We want to say thank you to everyone who came out, everyone who sponsored the event, everyone who donated something to help us out. We are so grateful and couldn’t have done it without you.”
Gerardi Insurance Services of Putnam and Choice1Graphics of Webster, were the lead sponsors of the event.
Nearly 90 golfers teed off in a shotgun start at Connecticut National in Putnam, and a couple of them came away with an award or two.
The team of Tim Cunha, Rick Bacca, Kurt LaFlamme, and Jim Colbert took first-place honors, firing a 52 in the best-ball format.
Mike Dupont, Dick Dalpe, Mark Verdone, and Ron Vargas finished two shots off the pace and in second place, followed by the third-place team of Brian Lynch, Mark Clemons, Bill Rathbone, and Steve Campaign, which finished with a 55.
No one won the brand-new truck with a hole-in-one on No. 4. Anne Kelly was the women’s winner of the longest drive. Vargas took the honor among the men. Logan Rawson took closest-to-the-pin for the men, coming within 4 feet, 4 inches; and Helene Poole was closest to the pin among the women at 28 feet, two inches.

POMFRET --- Gabrielle Labonte was recently nominated at the Republican state convention and the Pomfret Republicans as the Republican candidate for Judge of Probate for the 26th Probate District.
She said: “As a practicing attorney for over 20 years, I have been helping people through some of the most challenging aspects of life. These encompass the death of a loved one, the complexities of probate law, and the difficult choices that must be made in planning for one’s later years. These circumstances are trying and often stressful. Throughout my career I have had the desire to better serve my community in an expanded capacity. Now is that time and opportunity to serve.”
Labonte is a graduate of Putnam High School and lives in Pomfret with her husband, David Gratton, and son, Owen Gratton, a junior at Killingly High School.  She said she is also active in the communities, currently serving as the treasurer for BSA Troop 92 in Ashford, and a board member of several local organizations.
The 26th Probate District consists of the following towns: Ashford, Brooklyn, Eastford, Pomfret, Putnam, Thompson, and Woodstock. She said, “I look forward to meeting all of you throughout our district. “
