The St. James Memorial Golf Tournament has been in existence for 16 years.  Throughout that time there’s been one constant.  Sam Markley, the organizer of the event, has been the person behind the success that the tournament has witnessed each year.   This year’s tournament broke all records, raising more than $32.000 that will be presented by Markley to St. James School.
“I’m absolutely astounded by the results of this year’s tournament.  We set records for the number of players who participated and consequently we set a record for the amount of money we’ll give to Father John O’Neill and the school administration.  It’s this type of support that keeps me coming back each year,” said Markley.
On the golf course, after the threatening weather passed, the sun came out and the team sponsored by Zip’s Diner of Kevin Cole, Joe Markley, Bill Bartholic and Bill Panteleakos were hotter than the skyrocketing temperature as they posted a 14 under par to capture the 2013 crown.
Close behind the winners at minus 13 was the team of Mike Bernier, John Smutnick, Tom Morway and EJ Wholley.  The show pace was occupied by the foursome sponsored by Wealthcare Investments of Brian Corriveau, Martin Hill, Bill Cesare and Larry Signore.  The Middle of the Road team at seven under par was Pat Crowley, Adam Breton, Joel Blain and Tim Stirk.
Special contest winners were long drive champ Kevin Cole, putting contest winner Richard Wong, and Kevin Haggerty on the par three closest to the pin.
A St. James tradition started by Markley honors individuals who assist the tournament, the parish, the school or their community.  The Joe Mathieu Award was presented to the Langevin family that recently lost its father and brother Bob Langevin in a tragic accident.
Three longtime local coaches received awards for their work with young people.  The Albie Page Award was presented to former Danielson American Legion coach Charlie Crowley, who is also a coach at St. James School.  Tom Auclair, the former Tourtellotte Memorial High School and TriTown American Legion baseball coach, received the Jack LaGarde Award.  The Pastor’s Award went to former Killingly High School football coach Gene Blain.
The Liz Burke Award was presented to Jean Cyr and the women who assist with the work done by the Friends of Assisi Food Pantry in feeding the families in the Danielson area.  The Father John O’Neill Award was presented to John Navarro, who for many years has been a benefactor of St. James Parish and other charitable cause in northeastern Connecticut.
St. James School is to provide tuition assistance to all students who attend the school.  Currently the school has approximately 300 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

PUTNAM — Charter Oak Federal Credit Union will open a new full-service branch in Putnam to better serve its growing membership there and accommodate its continuing growth across the upper reaches of Windham County.
Charter Oak’s new Putnam location, which opens at 10 a.m. July 1, will be its 13th branch in New London and Windham counties and will absorb Quiet Corner’s operations on Providence Street.
Charter Oak’s new Putnam branch at 7 Providence Pike (Route 44) is conveniently located at Exit 97 off Interstate 395 and will feature two drive-ups, a drive-up 24 hour ATM and full-branch services inside. Lobby hours will be Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drive-up hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. until 12 noon.
“This new branch gives Charter Oak a strong new presence in an area that we hadn’t been able to fully serve – until now,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s Chief Executive Officer. “And it provides strategic value to Charter Oak, given our merger with Quiet Corner Community Credit Union, Inc., and our expanding membership in the greater Putnam, Thompson and Woodstock areas,” he said.
The new Putnam site will be Charter Oak’s third full-service branch in Windham County. The credit union has Windham County branches in Willimantic and Dayville, in addition to its branches across New London County. Charter Oak also operates a branch inside Killingly High School, to help further financial literacy at the high school level.
The merger of Charter Oak and Quiet Corner, effective June 30, 2013, has received final regulatory approval from the Connecticut Department of Banking, which regulates Quiet Corner, and the National Credit Union Administration, Charter Oak’s federal regulatory agency. Quiet Corner had assets of $1.7 million as of March 31, 2013.
Audrey Lefevre, Quiet Corner’s Manager/Treasurer, will serve as Branch Supervisor for the new Putnam branch. Sonya Armstrong, who is Branch Manager for Charter Oak’s Dayville location, will also serve as Branch Manager in Putnam.

Knights pg 11 6-6-13

THOMPSON — College commitments for local athletes continue to make the news as Marianapolis guard Michael Mallory recently announced that he will be attending Southern Connecticut State University on a full basketball scholarship in September.
Mallory, a postgraduate student who previously played at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, had a great season for the Golden Knights and coach Andrew Vitale after recovering from reconstructive surgery for a torn left ACL suffered in 2012.  He was instrumental in leading the Knights to a 21-9 record.  He finished the season averaging 17.6 points per game, with four rebounds per contest and 41.6 per cent shooting from the floor.  He was second on the team in assists.
“I’m excited about playing basketball in college.  I feel comfortable with my choice and playing at the next level.  It’s close to home, which one of the reasons for my choice,” said Mallory.
Southern Connecticut State University, in New Haven, is an NCAA Division II school.  The Owls play in the Northeast-10 Conference, one of the strongest Division II conferences in the country.
“Michael has been one of the hardest working kids I have ever had in my time at Marianapolis.  He worked tirelessly after his knee injury, over the summer and throughout the fall with our trainer, Buddy Drew, to get to where he is today.  Michael is a winning basketball player, and there is no doubt in my mind that he will be a great player in the NE-10 for years to come,” said  Vitale.
