POMFRET — The Pomfret 300 Committee and the Pomfret Sr. Advocate Commission will present “An Evening in the 19th Century” Sept. 7 at the Pomfret Senior Center on Rt.44. A catered dinner at 6 p.m. will serve foods of the Civil War era, including ham, biscuits, hard tack, and corn pudding. Connecticut State Senator Donald E. Williams Jr. will provide an introduction, giving context to the evening’s programs.
At 7 p.m. guests will take part in a recreation of An Anti-slavery Debate that is led by an Abolitionist and a plantation owner portrayed by Historic New England’s Roseland Cottage Education staff. G. Leslie Sweetnam, Woodstock, will present The Civil War Union Soldier, a first-person interpretation, at 8 p.m.

PUTNAM — The Town of Putnam will have a metal and non-electronic appliance pick up during the week of Aug. 26.
Residents should put metal and non-electronic appliances out at the edge of the road for pick up starting Aug. 26.
Pick up will be done according to regular trash routes, same day as your regular curbside pick up day. No stickers are required for metal and non-electronics pick up. Only metal items and non-electronics, example, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, hot water tanks, stoves. TVs, computers, monitors, printers, laptops, cell phones, etc. are electronics and will not be picked up. Electronics are no longer picked up at curbside and must be brought to the Fox Road Highway Garage in E. Putnam, Monday through Friday’s from 7:30 am – to 2:30 pm. Do not put out other bulky waste items such as, sofas, chairs, tables, etc. for the metal pick up. Those items go out with your regular trash pick up with the appropriate stickers on them. NORWICH — CorePlus Federal Credit Union has named a new official to its Governing Body. William R. Poirier of Thompson has been named as a director, effective July 23. As a not for profit cooperative financial institution, CorePlus Federal Credit Union annually elects officials who volunteer their time and talent to serve the Credit Union on behalf of its membership. The Credit Union Board and Supervisory Committee members are generally nominated from the membership at large and voted on by the members at the Annual Meeting, held in May. Mr. Poirier was appointed to fill the unexpired term of former Director Angela V. Arnold.
Poirier has been involved with the Credit Union since 1987, and in 2012 was named as the Chairman of the Supervisory Committee. The Supervisory Committee is responsible for retaining Credit Union internal and external Audit and Accounting firms as well as reviewing and assuring compliance with all audit and examination recommendations and requirements.
He is the Senior Administrator of Environmental Health and Safety with AT&T. Poirier also serves on the board of the QVCC Foundation, and is a member of the American Red Cross and BPOE in Putnam. An avid golfer and lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, Poirier lives in Thompson with his wife Dawn and two daughters.
