Ledyard pg 9 2-6-14

By Ron P. Coderre
One of the flaws on Woodstock Academy’s record this season was an early season loss to ECC Large Division opponent Ledyard.  The Centaurs had an opportunity to rectify that situation but were unable to get past the Colonels for the second time this season as they lost 91-77 on the road.  The Ledyard victory puts the Colonels squarely in control of the ECC Large Division.
The remainder of the high school teams had a rough week with only Putnam and Tourtellotte picking up wins.  The Tigers had the best week, beating a pair of pesky foes Lyman and Griswold.
Putnam Science Academy continued to rule the preps as the Mustangs posted two wins this week, raising their record to 19-2 and 11 in a row.  Marianapolis continued its improved play with a pair of victories, while Hyde-Woodstock tasted victory with an overtime win against Winchendon School.
Woodstock Passes 1 Tough Test, Fails Another
Things don’t get any easier for the CIAC defending Class L Champion Woodstock Centaurs as they move toward postseason play.  The Acads had a pair of rugged contests last week.  They passed one with flying colors but dropped the second despite a ferocious effort.
In a high-scoring affair Woodstock lost to ECC Large Division leader Ledyard 91-77.  A big second quarter in which the Colonels posted a 24-7 edge was the difference in the contest.  Despite a valiant effort to get back in the game the weary Centaurs were unable to muster enough offense.
Woodstock placed four players in double figures in the loss, led by a 25 point effort by big man Adam Converse.  Trent Peters, with three from beyond the arc added 13, while John McGinn also had 13 and Chris Lowry 12.
Earlier in the week Woodstock played a solid game from start to finish beating visiting Norwich Free Academy 58-48 as Will Bourgeois posted a game high 22 points for the 11-3 and 4-2 Large Division Centaurs.
Tourtellotte raised its record above the .500 mark to 7-6 with and 81-68 win over Lyman followed by a big road win 57-53 over Griswold.  Mike Jezierski with 23 points on six treys was the Tigers leading scorer, while high scoring Kaevon Safford had 22 and Walter Rocca chipped in 13 in the win over Lyman.
The win over Griswold was decided in the final period when the visiting Tigers went on a 24-11 rampage to come from behind in pulling out the victory.  Safford with 26 big points was the game-high scorer, while Shawn Houle with 11 was also in double figures.
Putnam had a one-and-one week losing big 81-38 to visiting A.I. Prince Tech before rebounding with a 56-43 victory over neighboring Ellis Tech.  Jordan Tetreault had a big night in the win over the Eagles as he posted 22 points.  The Clippers are 3-9 on the year and face the impossible task of having to win six of eight remaining games on the schedule to qualify for the State tournament.
Ellis Tech lost its only other game, 66-53 to Grasso Tech, remaining winless at 0-13.  Plainfield lost a pair, suffering defeat at the hands of Waterford (63-54) and New London (68-54) falling to 5-8 on the season.  Ryan Pambuku enjoyed a great offensive week, posting 28 against the Lancers and 31 versus the Whalers.  Killingly, like the Panthers, lost a pair, being dropped by New London 78-54 and Montville 70-55.  Nick Hewitt was the lone bright spot for the 6-7 Redmen with 18 against the Whalers and a 31 point explosion against the Indians.
Win Streak Continues for PSA
Putnam Science Academy continues its climb toward a potential berth in the National Prep Tournament in March at Albertus Magnus College with a couple of convincing victories.  The Mustangs opened the week with a successful trip to Kimball Union, returning home victorious 84-67.  The Scientists placed four players in double figures led by Danny “Up tempo” Upchurch and Jordan “Man Mountain” Butler with 16 apiece followed by Dalique Mingo (13) and Anthony Durham (12).  Newcomer Mamadou Dairra, seeing his first action for the Scientists had five points.
In the national Prep School Invitational held at Rhode Island College, the Mustangs faced off against GC Academy from Czechoslovakia and came away victorious 80-61.  Upchurch with 24 points and five assist was the big gun for the Scientists.  Durham had 13 points, nine boards, five assists and four steals in a great all around performance.  Three players Chaise Daniels, Mingo and Butler each had 10 points for the 19-2 Mustangs.
Marianapolis, which appears to be coming together as a unit, had a solid 64-44 win over Brimmer & May behind a balanced scoring attack.  Ryan Bernstein had 13 points with Eric Long and Bobby Ahearn chipping a dozen apiece and Eric Murdock Jr. adding 10 points.
The Golden Knights then produced big 57-56 win over always tough perennial power Worcester Academy.  Chiamaka Browne with 13 points led a trio of scorers in double digits.  He was joined by Long (11) and Ahearn (10) for 9-6 overall and 5-3 NEPSAC-AA Marianapolis.
Topsy-turvy Hyde-Woodstock produced an 84-81 win over the Winchendon School as Kenny Grant awoke from his lethargy with an outstanding 40-point outing.  Dexter Thompson had 22 and Damon Gomes 12 for the Wolfpack.  Greens Farms School came to Woodstock and found verdant pastures, beating Hyde 63-59 in a nip-and-tuck contest.  Grant (23), Thompson (13) and Gomes (10) led the 8-9 Wolfpack.
Pomfret lost to Williston Northampton 80-65 despite 23 points from Cam Winston and 21 from Jeff Iyalekhue.  The Griffs are 6-7 on the season.  Marianapolis II raised its record to 10-5 and 5-2 SENE with wins over McDuffie School 61-42, Williams School 51-36 and Falmouth Academy 71-25..  The Golden Knights had four players in double figures in the McDuffie victory, led by Kevin Tata (14), Dylan Horn (13), Andrew Ford (11) and Paul Doherty (10).  The quartet of Ford (13), Matt Sabacinski (12), Horn (12) and Doherty (12) were all in double figures for the winners.
Scoring Leaders:Kaevon Safford – Tourtellotte – 21.8; Ryan Pambuku – Plainfield - 21.6; Anthony Durham – Putnam Science Academy – 18.1; Kenny Grant – Hyde-Woodstock – 17.4; Nick Hewitt – Killingly – 15.6

Lis pg 9 2-6-14

By Ron P. Coderre
This week’s sporty RPC shout out is sent along to Putnam’s Bob Fournier, recently honored by the Northeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce as Business Leader of the Year.  He also celebrated a birthday on February 5.  Happy Birthday, Bob.
Remember Tracy Lis?  In the mid-‘80s she packed the gym at Killingly High School every time the Redgals took the court.  Throngs came out to watch her throw in 50 points or more in a game on more than one occasion.
Moving on to Providence College she did the same thing for Lady Friar’s basketball, packing Alumni Hall on the PC campus.  She went on to play professionally for the New England Blizzard of the old American Basketball League.  Why she even had a stint with the Harlem Magicians and the famed Marques Haines, as the only woman to play for the traveling troupe.
Well it’s nice to know that Tracy Lis hasn’t been forgotten.  After giving Danielson and northeastern Connecticut hoop fans and then New England basketball fans innumerable nights they’ll never forget, Lis was once again in the spotlight, more than 20 years after she departed Providence College.
As more than one well known honoree has been known to say when recognized many years after graduation, “It’s about time you recognized me.”  Lis didn’t say this but we’ll say it for her.
On Saturday, January 25 Providence College honored Lis by retiring her jersey and raising her banner to the rafters of The Dunk.  She was honored along with a pair of Friar men’s greats, Kevin Stacom and Joey Hassett.  It’s a good bet that between the trio they poured in more than 5000 points for the Friars.  Lis is only the second Lady Friar to have her jersey retired and only the third female to receive this honor in the long and illustrious history of Providence College athletics.
A quick refresher on her accomplishments at PC.  She still stands as the all-time leading female scorer in the history of Providence basketball with 2,543 points in 127 games, which equates to slightly more than 20 points per game.  Add to that the fact that she also corralled 821 career rebounds and you soon realize the impact she had on the program and why she received so many honors when she was a Lady Friar.
She still stands among the leaders in Big East women’s basketball in almost every offensive category.  In 1990 she led her team to the Big East title and the NCAA Sweet 16.  She was named the 1992 ECAC Player of the Year.  And in 2004 the Big East recognized her again by naming her among only 15 players to be named to the conference’s Silver Anniversary team.
At the ceremony at the Omni Hotel honoring Lis for her basketball accomplishments, Lis said, “I’m proud to be a Friar.  It definitely was the right decision to go to Providence College.  Coming back now and being here I see how great of a place PC really is.  This was a wonderful day, seeing the banner unveiled was really special.”
Tracy Lis was also very special, especially on the basketball court.
Youngsters Hoop It Up…
On Saturday, January 11 the Putnam Elks Club ran its annual Hoop Shoot at the Putnam Middle School.  At the end of the competition four winners were crowned and received the honor of moving on to the BPOE Eastern Connecticut District Level shoot out.  Nicholas Renshaw was the 8-9 year old winner, while Jonathan Moore captured the 10-11 division and Aiden Ciquera the 12-13 category.  Kayleigh Lyons was the female winner in the 10-11 year old competition.
Members of the Elks Lodge who organized and worked the event were Mike Stewart, State Hoop Shoot Coordinator, Cassidy Stewart, Alan Phillips, Jacquelyn Robbins, Dennis Golden, Paula and Lori Foster-Krajniak, Walter “Nap” Napierata, Rhonda and Diane Robinson and Marcel Morissette.
I Want to Go to Disney World…
Nate Trythall,  business manager at The Center for Bone and Joint Care in Putnam, recently fulfilled a dream when he went to Disney World in Orlando, Fla.  Although the trip was part vacation, it was also part work because Trythall ran in the Disney Half-Marathon.  Although recently hampered by a hip injury and unable to go through a full training regime leading up to the marathon, he was able to finish the 13-plus mile event.
Bochain Redux…
In a recent UConn women’s basketball game Moriah Jefferson, Geno Auriemma’s feisty point guard turned in a spectacular defensive performance when she had nine steals and six assists.  The nine steals in one game fell one shy of tying the school record held by former Plainfield High School grad Cathy Bochain and University of Hartford coach Jennifer Rizzotti.  Bochain had her 10 steals in 1980 and Rizzotti did it in 1996.
Future Teammates…
In a recent basketball game at Putnam Science Academy two players who will be college teammates next year took the court on opposing teams.  Demitruis Floras of the McDuffie School squared off against Chaise Daniels of Putnam Science Academy.  Although PSA prevailed in the game 87-65, Floras turned in a great game for McDuffie scoring 20 points and demonstrating great floor skills.  Daniels had 10 points for the Mustangs while controlling the boards on both ends of the court.  Next season the pair will be playing for coach Tom Moore at Quinnipiac University.
State Rep at Putnam Rotary…
Dan Rovero State Representative from the 51st Assembly District was the guest speaker at the Putnam Rotary Club on Tuesday, January 21 at J. D. Cooper’s Restaurant.  Rovero spoke on the upcoming session of the Connecticut Legislature and answered a variety of questions on current issues.  Rovero, a 1955 graduate of Putnam High School, was a standout running back for the Clippers on the gridiron and catcher on the baseball team.
Quinnipiac’s Drame Injured…
Ousmane Drame, the former Marianapolis Prep standout and current center at Quinnipiac University, has missed two games for the Bobcats due to a sprained knee.  Drame who is averaging 12.5 point and 9.8 rebounds per game returned to action on Thursday, January 30 in a loss to Canisius.  He was injured in a game against Iona shortly after being named the MAAC player-of-the-week.  He received the honor for averaging 14.5 points and 15.5 rebounds during a 2-1 week.  In a game against Monmouth University Drame turned in a 21 rebound performance.
In Drame’s absence his former Marianapolis teammate Ike Azotam once again had a stellar performance scoring 21points and corralling 12 rebounds in a 90-86 overtime victory over Manhattan.
From The Annals Of Putnam Sports History…
February 1906: Putnam High School defeated Oxford High School 29-16.  Captain Lizotte played the game with one arm bandaged and out of commission, but he nevertheless made 17 points.  (Information contributed by Willie Zamagni)

POMFRET — For two periods the NFA-St. Bernard-Bacon co-op squad took it to Woodstock Academy Jan. 30 playing a physical, up tempo game that put the Centaurs back on their heels. Missing their starting Goalie Baylee Johns and sophomore Forward Jordan Lamothe’ the boys looked lost yielding two NFA goals through two periods.
The third period looked to be more of the same until sophomore Zach Burnham took a rebound pass from Nathan DeLuca and buried it into the net to cut the lead to 2-1. A few minutes later WA sophomore defenseman Douglas Gerrity lifted a slap shot passed the goalie to tie the game at 2. The momentum now shifted to the Centaurs who finally got it together with Nathan DeLuca scoring on a pass from Will Smith to take their first lead of the game 3-2. Later it was DeLuca putting the game on ice scoring his second goal of the game to end it at 4-2. Also credited with assists were Tyler Huhtanen and Will Liscomb.
Sophomore Tucker Johns had a stellar night between the pipes stopping 38 shots on goal. WA improves to 4 and 5 on the season. The Centaurs return action at noon Feb. 8 at Jahn Rink for a tilt against Taconic, Mass.
