A couple weeks ago Woodstock Academy shocked the local sports world when it announced it was initiating a Post-Graduate basketball program. This week the Centaurs issued another shocking announcement with the news that seven-year varsity basketball coach Greg Smith was stepping down from his position.
Smith, who posted an 89-71 varsity record, is best remembered for leading the Academy team to the CIAC State Class L Championship in 2012-2013 with a victory at Mohegan Sun over vaunted Trinity Catholic. Along the way Smith brought his teams to four Eastern Connecticut Conference and CIAC Tournaments. He also posted two 20-plus victory seasons.
“His (Coach Smith) accomplishments on the sidelines have been outstanding. From his positive and optimistic personality, to the life lessons he taught to his players each and every day, to his endless energy, Coach Smith has left an indelible mark on the student-athletes that have had the pleasure of being able to call him coach,” said Woodstock Athletic Director Aaron Patterson in a news release.
During his 20 years as a coach at Woodstock, Smith has served in a variety of positions along the sidelines. He served as a football assistant for five seasons, five years in lacrosse and soccer, seven in track and field and one year in tennis. He was a member of the basketball coaching staff for 19 seasons, the last seven as the head coach.
Smith who is originally from Pennsylvania, came to Connecticut to play football. He was a sought after linebacker in high school in the Keystone State. A knee injury curtailed his playing career.
“It has been an honor to coach at Woodstock Academy for the past 20 years. I had the great fortune to get to know so many amazing kids that have made my life so rich. My home is filled with pictures, my wardrobe is full of blue and gold and my mind is swimming with great memories,” Smith said in a news release.
Smith thanked all those who have touched his life during his coaching career. He especially pointed out the young men and women he’s associated with over the years who called him “Coach.” He also thanked the staff and administration of the Academy and singled out his family.
“Thanks to my family for allowing me to fulfill my dreams. (And) lastly, thank you to the student body of Woodstock Academy for making my life so special. Always remember that Life is Good,” he concluded.
Smith plans to continue as a teacher in the school’s History Department. He hopes to continue to grow basketball at Woodstock Academy and in northeastern Connecticut by staying involved with summer programs and with scouting.
AD Patterson noted that the basketball coaching position will be posted immediately in an effort to fill Smith’s position as quickly as possible. The Pomfret Planning & Zoning Commission will hold the following Public Hearings on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, starting at 7:00 PM at the Old Town House on Town House Drive off Averill Road:
1. An application from Brian Bourque, Deacon, First Congregational Church, Inc., 13 Church Road, to amendment the Town’s Zoning Regulations to create a new zoning district named the Pomfret Street Residential Village District (PSRVD). The text amendment includes, but is not limited to, dimensional requirements (lot size, setbacks, frontage, building coverage, minimum buildable area), permitted uses, special permitted uses and architectural standards.
2. An application from First Congregational Church, Inc., 13 Church Road, for a zone change from Pomfret Street Residential District (PSR) to Pomfret Street Residential Village District (PSRVD). The land for the proposed zone change is located immediately north of Bradley Road continuing to include six more properties or portions of properties north of Grosvenor Road on the east side of Route 169 and includes an area on Grosvenor Road (North and South Sides).
A copy of the application is on file in the office of the Planning and Zoning Commission, 5 Haven Road Pomfret, Connecticut. The file is available for review during normal business hours.

The Pomfret Street Cemetery Board will be meeting on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 10:00 AM at the Pomfret Town Hall, Town Clerk’s Office. This will be the first meeting of the Board since it was established by the Town of Pomfret, Board of Selectmen. The purpose of the Board is to oversee the care and maintenance of the Pomfret Street Cemetery off Route 44, also known as Putnam Road. The meeting is open to the public. All interested parties are welcome to attend.
