Hoop Shoot
PUTNAM — Twenty-six local youth participated in the Putnam Elks’ annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw Competition at the Putnam Middle School  Jan. 11.
Local winners this year are: Nicholas Renshaw, 8-9, Jonathon Moore, 10-11, Aiden Ciquera, 12-13, and Miss Kayleigh Lyons, 10-11.
Saturday’s winners will advance to the BPOE Eastern Connecticut District Level Hoop Shoot at 9 a.m. Jan. 26 at Windham High School. Following the district level contest, Hoop Shoot contestants will compete for a chance to become the number one free-throw-shooter in their home state, and then move on to compete in regionals and nationals.
Mike Stewart, Past Exalted Ruler and First Year Trustee, said that this year’s event was another successful endeavor and added that all enjoyed themselves, particularly during tie breakers.
The Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest is a co-educational youth basketball program sponsored by the Elks National Foundation. Highlighting the Elks commitment to America’s youth, the Hoop Shoot begins at the local level with Elks Lodges. From there, participants advance through district, state, and regional competitions. Of the millions of young people who participate and advance, six national champions are named - one boy and one girl from each of three age groups: 8-9, 10-11, 12-13.

The winners of the national competition each receive a trophy and their names are inscribed on a plaque housed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

School's art on exhibit
POMFRET — In “Altered,” the most recent show at PSART in Putnam’s Silver Circle Studio featuring the works of Pomfret School students and faculty, teacher Lindsay Lehmann’s advanced and AP 2D Design class students have taken what they have learned so far to a higher level, to create one-of-a-kind images.
Inspired by the work of Iranian photographer and filmmaker Shirin Neshat, whose work is in the show She Who Tells a Story currently up at the MFA in Boston (from Aug. 13 – Jan. 12), the students examined what happened when they altered their photographs during post-production to include mixed media. With results ranging from simple to ornate, students explored multiple techniques in 2D and 3D design, working with the image to either change its intention, enhance it, or explore a variety of techniques.
“The show is intended to remind viewers that there is more to the art of photography than just creating a “pretty picture,” said Lehmann. “Our young photographers come to realize that a piece of work may never be finished, and creating is a part of life-long exploration.” Seventeen students, all juniors and seniors, are represented.
“Altered” runs from Jan. 14 – March 18, with an opening reception on from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 17 at Silver Circle Studio, 75 Main St., Putnam. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
