Because I Had To  …   Pickle
Pickle is a bit of a fun word. And to make things even more interesting, the word has several different meanings. For example, I can pickle something, like a pepper, which not only extends its consume-by date, but also adds a new flavor profile to the item.
I do not like beets, but if they are pickled, I will willingly eat some. But a better and more literal example is that of a cucumber. I love the taste of fresh cucumbers and often make them a star ingredient in my salad. Yet, when a cucumber is pickled, it becomes an actual pickle.  Ironically, I love a pickle even more than I love a cucumber. Pickles are certainly crunchier than a cucumber. Plus, they come in all shapes and sizes, making them a perfect accompaniment to any sandwich. Given this, it makes me wonder how the word pickle came to be associated with the notion of being in a difficult situation.
Some people consider that this meaning of pickle originated, somewhat, from Shakespeare in his reference to the drunkenness of a character. Others, however, feel that what may be more likely is that the process of pickling, for the cucumber, is simply like being… stuck. I mean, to be pickled, a cucumber must sit, for a long time, in vinegary brine. And the more things, such as spices and bits of vegetables, that are added to the brine, the more flavorful the pickling becomes. Ultimately, making pickling a messy, yet somewhat stagnant, process.
Recently, I ran into an unexpected travel change. The originally scheduled aircraft for my long-haul flight suffered a technical problem and a new aircraft was summoned to replace it. In the airline business, this is a rather common occurrence. What was a bit uncommon about the situation was that the new aircraft was a completely different model. It also had a completely different seating configuration resulting in a nearly total reshuffling of seats for all the passengers. Suddenly, my extra leg room seat on the window became a little legroom seat in the middle. To add insult to injury, the new plane was smaller than the old plane and so it was completely full. There was not a spare seat to be found. Many passengers were extra distraught because more than not just having their original seats, they were no longer sitting with, or even near, their travel companions. At least I was still sitting next to my husband, and he could, at least, stretch his (much longer) legs (a bit) into the aisle. I didn’t really relish the idea of being stuck between two people for more than eight (long) hours on a plane.  But there wasn’t anything I could do about it. I was (appropriately referenced), like a cucumber, in a bit of a pickle…

Berk awarded scholarship
Trisha Berk, daughter of Jennifer and Daniel Berk of Woodstock, was recently selected as the recipient of the Andy Thiede HR Certification Scholarship. The scholarship was created by Andy Thiede, an HR professional from Berlin, with a passion for helping others in the HR field.
Berk is an HR Business Coordinator at HR Bull Consulting, in North Branford, and currently lives in West Haven.
To date, Andy has proudly awarded more than $8,500 in scholarships to Connecticut professionals working in HR. Trisha is the 18th recipient of the Andy Thiede HR Certification Scholarship.
“Trisha has done everything right to pave the way for a wonderful career in human resources, said Andy Thiede. She added, “Trisha earned a master’s degree, joined our local SHRM chapter (Society for Human Resource Management, and is the world’s largest HR association), networked with colleagues and landed a position, and now has obtained her HR certification credentials. I can’t wait to see what happens next for her!”
Berk was selected for the HR Certification Scholarship based on her dedication to helping people, and her ambition to excel in her HR career. She used the scholarship to test for the SHRM-CP (Society for Human Resource Management-Certified Professional) designation.
On July 1 she completed the 4-hour SHRM-CP certification test, and passed it the first time.
“I have a lot of big dreams for my career in HR, a set of goals to benchmark, and plans on how I will reach my full potential,” she said. “This scholarship allowed me to earn my SHRM-CP certification, which is a key goal that will help me achieve my career objectives.”

Honored at
Westview
DAYVILLE — Sister Noble, Ansamma George, RN, gained the distinction of Westview Health Care Center’s Employee of the Month for June 2024.  Sister Noble is one of the Nursing Supervisors at Westview; most often working during the third shift.  She joined in 2021. She is also a practicing nun of St. James’ Church in Danielson.
She credits her passion for nursing care to an experience she had while in India.  When she was taking care of a patient there as she performed volunteering work, the patient presented with a wound that was becoming badly infected.  She started praying for the patient’s recovery, and lo and behold, the wound began to heal.  Sister Noble acknowledged the power of prayerful care, and then decided that she could have even further impact by combining her faith with knowledge as a Registered Nurse.  She began her education and ultimately earned her degree in nursing from St. John’s Medical College Hospital in Bangalore, India.
During her off time, Sister Noble enjoys gardening, cooking, and baking as a strong passion.  Sister Noble likes to listen to music—especially with bedridden patients.  She will go in and listen to music with them, and hold their hands as a means of offering additional compassion to the medical aid she provides.  She has a sibling, Sister Brigit Pulickudiyil, and she enjoys their time together during pastimes and prayers.
Her heart is full of love for the patients whose care is entrusted to her.  “Sometimes the patients are feeling down, and I will talk to them to help them feel more comfortable.  Recently I had a patient and the first night she was with us she was very unsure of her condition and prognosis.  I told her that in the early stages of her treatment, things may go up and down but you will feel better tomorrow.  She later told me that our conversation on her first night here made her commit to her own full recovery and she was very thankful.”  She went on further about her commitment to helping others
Westview Administrator and Executive Vice President David T. Panteleakos said: “We are blessed to have Sister Noble, Ansamma George, RN, as a member of our community here at Westview.  She has made a profoundly positive impression on patients, residents, and her fellow colleagues in this community of care.  I am proud to see her dedication to professional medical care along with her faithful devotion to bedside manner. ”
