Prep soccer team on winning streak
PUTNAM — The Putnam Science Academy Prep Soccer team won their games while the Varsity Soccer team took a loss.
Prep Soccer: The Prep team has been on a winning streak, improving its record with back-to-back victories. Oct. 23, they defeated Hoosac 4-2 in an impressive match. Pedro Rosa set the pace, scoring the first goal in the first half. In the second half, Gian Filizzola added a goal with 13 minutes left, Pedro scored again at the 77th minute, and Filizzola capped off the game with another goal at the 81st minute.
The momentum continued on Oct. 27 with a 4-3 win over Northwood. Renan Mafra opened the scoring nine minutes into the first half, though Northwood managed to tie it up with 27 minutes left in the half. Rosa and Renan Mafra each scored two goals in this high-energy game, helping the team secure another strong win.
Varsity Soccer: The Varsity team had a challenging game against Hoosac, narrowly losing 2-1. Hoosac scored in the final 20 seconds of the first half, putting the team in a tight position. Tanaka Makechemu responded with a goal for PSA, but ultimately, the Varsity team couldn’t close the gap.

Sixth-seeded Centaurs find
way to ECC championship
Improbable? Not in the mind of Woodstock Academy coach Dave St. Jean.
The boys’ soccer team advanced to the ECC championship match with a 1-0 win over second-seeded Bacon Academy.
“I anticipated we could do this,” St. Jean said. “I’ve been watching this team since they were freshmen and sophomores and I’ve had faith in them from that time. I knew, as I watched, that there were a few things that they needed to control and if they played disciplined and played together, we had enough, if not more skill, than the teams that we’re playing. I’m not surprised by it. I’m glad we got healthy and I’m glad we finally have some continuity between our offense and defense.”
The Centaurs faced top-seeded East Lyme in the championship match on Tuesday at Ledyard High School. (The match ended too late for this edition)
That continuity proved more than valuable in the first two matches of the ECC tournament as the defense pitched a pair of shutouts.
The Centaurs (7-8-3) handed Windham a 2-0 loss on Thursday in a first-round match before the shutout over the Bobcats.
That came despite the fact that Woodstock did have a couple of injuries which meant St. Jean had to shuffle some players.
Add to that an early match, it started at 10 a.m., on the road, left plenty of questions that the Centaurs answered more than satisfactorily.
The offense was just enough against Bacon Academy in Colchester as Derek Rodriguez Arenas was again in the right place at the right time.
After a scoreless first half, the Centaurs finally broke through halfway through the second half.
Will St. John got the ball to Rodriguez Arenas who found a hole in the defense, forced the Bobcats’ keeper to commit and chipped it over his head with 20 minutes left in regulation.
The Centaurs have a go-to player.
It was the 12th goal of the season for Rodriguez Arenas and the first assist of the year for St. John.
The Centaurs advanced to the semifinal with the win over Windham in a first-round contest on Thursday.
Garrett Bushey broke the scoreless tie halfway through the second half when he scored for the Centaurs off a Logan Rawson assist.
Just moments later, Rodriguez Arenas tallied off a Philip Feanny Aleman assist to give the Centaurs a little breathing room against the Whippets (8-6-3).
Earlier in the week, the Centaurs celebrated Senior Day at the Bentley Athletic Complex.
Wilcox, Bushey, Shawn Mugagga, Logan Rawson, Austin Byer, Gabe DePierdomenico, Michael Susi, Matt Hernandez and Eli Susi were all recognized prior to the match with Waterford.
The scoreboard ended in the Lancers’ favor, 2-0, in a match that was called due to darkness with 35 minutes to play after a lengthy delay occurred when a Waterford player suffered an injury on the field.

ban pg 8 10-30-24

BAN IS STILL ON - 10/30/24

Ban on burning in place until further notice
PUTNAM — A “Ban on Burning” has been imposed by the Putnam Fire Marshal in accordance with Town of Putnam Ordinance.
A Ban on Burning has been imposed by the Fire Marshal beginning today, October 28, 2024,  and shall remain in effect until further notice. The unusually dry weather is causing all outside recreational fires to be considered as hazardous.  Since the elevated fire danger has been of concern, the Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office and the local fire departments have received numerous complaints from concerned citizens about open burning and recreational campfires.
This Ban shall include the use of all fire pits, campfires, and the kindling and use of flame outdoors.
The Ban will remain in effect until weather conditions are considered to be safe.  The State of Connecticut DEEP has already imposed a similar Ban for all State Parks.
The combination of recent dry weather and very dry ground will continue to make conditions favorable for wildfire development today. Minimum relative humidity values are expected to range between 25 to 45 percent today, along with light north winds.  Fire danger is expected to be highest on Thursday and may be high again on Friday if forecasted showers do not provide any significant relief from the very dry conditions.
Persons who fail to comply with this order may be subject to fines as written in the Town of Putnam Ordinance.
When conditions return to favorable for recreational fires the Fire Marshal will lift the Ban with notification in the form of a press release.  Until that time, we ask for your cooperation and understanding.  Our goal is to keep the residents and visitors of Putnam safe and prevent the unnecessary response to an incident that could pose a threat to them and Putnam’s First Responders.
