Opera: Does
the  glass
slipper fit?
Performing Arts of Northeast Connecticut treated nearly 2000 students from thirty regional schools to two opera performances May 14.
Who will the next professional opera singer from NE CT? Currently, Chris Lucier, tenor, and native of Brooklyn, CT, now holds that title. He recently brought his talents back to NE CT with his new career in opera. He is a recent MM graduate of Manhattan School of Music’s Opera Program and he attended educational performances by Performing Arts as a local student. During in-school programs at each participating school, he personally visited participating schools and gave a rousing overview of this year’s opera, Rossini’s Cinderella.
Funding for the Children’s Educational Opera and Symphony Program is primarily community-based through private donations, area businesses, grants, and local fund-raisers. Our programs enrich the quality of life and the cultural well being of our communities. For more information about Performing Arts and how you can help make these student programs possible, go to www.performingartsnect.org.
Eastford Elementary School 4th grade students from Mrs. McCombe’s class and the 5th grade students from Mrs. Reynolds class pose with the Salt Marsh Opera cast members after the performance of Rossini’s Cinderella.
Chris Lucier gave a rousing overview of Rossini’s Cinderella to Mrs. Wood’s class at Woodstock Middle School. Each participating school is visited by an artist for an in-school workshop prior to the professional performances at the Hyde Cultural Center.

Fundraising pg 5 6-6-13

Fund-raiser lineup
PUTNAM — The line-up for the seventh annual Particle Accelerator: A Day of Music and Hope, from noon to 11 p.m. June 8 at Rotary Park includes: Nothing Left to Give, Frank Pace and the All-Stars, The Papa Joe Show, White Rose Confession
Our Burgundy, Evoke, D.I.M., Santa Mamba, Slang Junkies, Synergy, Adam Trudel, Kala Farnham, Shane Hall and the TickleBomb Orchestra.
The festival, held in memory of local musician Jack Young Jr., is aimed at raising awareness and funds for suicide prevention and local mental health programs.  In addition to the concert, the family-friendly festival will also feature art displays, children’s activities and booths from local nonprofit organizations providing information on various local behavioral health and human services.
John Deary, an active member of the “Quiet Corner” community and owner of Deary’s Gymnastics Supply, is serving as Chair of this year’s event.  Deary says it’s a cause that is close to his heart, having lost a sibling to suicide.
While the festival is free to the public, proceeds from sponsorships and donations to the event generate critical funding to support Mental Health First Aid training and other mental health programs administered by United Services, Inc., northeastern Connecticut’s nonprofit behavioral health center.
United Services was the first behavioral health center in the state to offer Mental Health First Aid training, which teaches how to identify and respond to someone in the midst of a mental health crisis, to get them the professional help they need before it’s too late.  United Services offers the training free of charge to first responders, educators, healthcare workers, and other members of the community.  Last year’s Particle Accelerator raised nearly $5,000 for these programs.
To find out more about Particle Accelerator and to donate, visit www.particleaccelerator.org.  For more information about Mental Health First Aid training and other behavioral health programs available through United Services, visit www.UnitedServicesCT.org or call 860-774-2020.
