Americanism pg 1 4-10-14

 
PUTNAM — The Putnam Elementary School 5th grade American Legion “Americanism”  class Awards Ceremony, sponsored  by American legion Post 13, was held April 4. This is an annual event held at the Putnam Elementary School. 
The winners:
Runners Up:    Mr. Altiere’s class: Violet Pietrowski and Tre Johnson
Mr. Prochowski’s class: Haley Syrjala  and Nathan Barylski
Ms. Snelling’s class: Jamie Petre  and Jack Lomax
Ms. Torski’s class: Laylah Chavez  and Eddie Prestas
Ms. Whiteley’s class: Sarah Keith  Jackson Dias.
Distinguished Overall Winners:  
Alex Hutchins  and Mark Caswell
AL Post 13  ”Americanism” Teacher, Patricia Steinbrick, USAF veteran, gave a short description of the classes taught  including: Courage, Honor, Leadership, Patriotism, Scholarship, and Service. Students responded with examples learned in those classes. The goal of each one hour class is “better citizenship” within their generation.
Guests included:  AL Post 13 Cmdr. Alan Joslin, AL Post 13 Vice Cmdr. David Smutnick, AL Post 13  Adjutant Marc Coderre, AL Post 13 Chaplain Don Steinbrick,  Dar Registrar Mary Brown, and special guest speaker Manny Rodiguies, Cmdr. VFW Post 10589.
Rodiquies spoke of the Flag: the meanings of stars, stripes, fringe, the proper care and destruction of worn flags. He included the meaning of the Tri-Corned Hat, which connects the Flag tri-corner folding ceremony to this hat.
