PUTNAM — The Easter bunny hopped over to Putnam and Pomfret recently, bringing 1,000 plastic eggs with candy inside along for his visit.
Every year, just before Easter, Cargill Council 64 Knights of Columbus make sure that the children from St. Mary Church of the Visitation in Putnam and Most Holy Trinity Church in Pomfret get to run out on the church lawn and collect as many eggs as they can.
With a combined total of 60 children participating at the two parish Easter egg hunts this year, each girl and boy got to keep the candy in the eggs they found, plus another bag of candy, plus a small toy or stuffed animal to take home.
The annual event has been held at both parishes for over a decade, part of the year-round spate of youth programs sponsored by Cargill Council.
“This is just another one of the great things we do as members of the Knights of Columbus,” said Cargill Council 64 Grand Knight David G. Lamontagne Sr. “It’s always a wonderful feeling to help someone out, and even better when you see all the little children running around, having fun with a special function and knowing that we are an integral part of putting it on.”
The grand knight added that Cargill Council maintains a children’s activities fund, drawing out money for events like this. He said the toys, stuffed animals and candy given during this year’s Easter egg hunt cost the council about $370. Some of Cargill Council’s other programs for young people include providing free, new winter coats for needy local children every year, the awarding of an annual scholarship for a local high school student preparing for a health care career, an annual Christmas party for the young children and grandchildren of members and year-round support for Troop 21, St. Mary’s Boy Scout troop.
