Ivor Thompson,
WWII vet
WOODSTOCK — Ivor Thompson of Woodstock, 96, died Nov. 27, 2017.
He was born Jan. 4, ‘921, in London, England to Alfred and Dorothea Thompson.
Ivor served in WWII in the RAF as a fighter pilot, flying Spitfire airplanes.
He met and married his wife Sarah Caroline (Sally) Healey during the war. They had a whirlwind, love-at-first sight meeting in NYC while Ivor was on a layover to Australia. Married two weeks after they met at the Little Church around the Corner in NYC they remained together for almost 55 years.
Ivor and Sally lived and raised their children in Westport. Ivor worked in NYC as a successful commodity trader in precious metals. After retirement Ivor and Sally spent their time with family and friends moving to Woodstock. Spending summers sailing out of Woods Hole, Mass., and winters with many projects including woodworking and bee keeping. He enjoyed gardening and sharing pies and bread with friends.
Ivor’s wife, Sally, his eldest daughter, Alexandra Kirkpatrick and grandson, Bradley Kirkpatrick preceded him in death. He leaves his daughter, Carol Lynn Courcier, son-in-law, Bruce Courcier of Falmouth, Mass.; son, John Thompson of Chepachet; grandchildren, Gregory Kirkpatrick, Rob Courcier, Sarah Courcier, Caitlyn Courcier Crowley, Melissa Thompson Bastin and Amy Thompson Slater.
A celebration of Ivor’s life will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 6 at the Church of Messiah in Woods Hole with burial in Woodstock. Donations: Favorite charity in lieu of flowers. Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam.
Evelyn Andert
EASTFORD — Evelyn Lucille Andert , 95, of Andert Drive, Eastford, peacefully departed this life on Nov. 9, 2017, at the home of her son Joseph.
She was predeceased by her husband, Irving Andert.
She was born Nov. 28, 1921, in Norwich. Evelyn grew up on a small farm in Lisbon, where she helped raise chickens and had a horse named May Girl and a dog Lady. She loved her job at a large woolen mill in Occum where she was a fabric inspector.
She met the man of her dreams and married Irving Andert April 21, 1951. Together they ran Haven Lodge Dairy Farm. Evelyn loved and named each of the cows. She loved mowing the lawns on her little tractor and gardening. In 1963 they decided to stop farming and started Andert Carpet Service which they ran until 1990. After retiring they began extensive travel in the U.S., Caribbean Islands, Asia and Europe.
She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Cecilia Benoit Demarais and brothers Gerald Demarais and Lucien Demarais. Evelyn leaves her daughter Nancy Marmat (Jerald) and daughter Nicole; son Joseph Andert and Carla Harrington of Eastford; son Donald Andert and children Clayton, Kaitlyn, Rachel and her son Camden of Georgia; son Michael Andert (Laura) and daughter Olivia; sister Mary Rose Gayle of Ellington.

Aino Evelin Berris
BROOKLYN — Aino Evelin Berris, 97, of Brooklyn, died Nov. 8, 2017. She was born in 1920.
She was predeceased by her husband, Peter George Berris; her parents, Ida and Ivar Hill and her siblings Henry and Charles Hill, Helen Carroll and Kathryn Rukstella.
With her husband, Peter, she opened Berris Motor Inn in 1956 - the first motor inn in New England and the venue for many local weddings, holiday parties, graduation celebrations and business dinners. Evelin, as she was known to most, was famous for her exceptional cooking, especially her pies. She had a quick, dry wit and an encyclopedic memory that nearly spanned a century.
Evelin had a deep appreciation for nature, which she passed on to her children and to others as a 4-H leader. She was the inspiration for Sweet Evelina’s Restaurant in Woodstock. On warm sunny days, friends and neighbors often visited her front porch where she spent afternoons with her canine companion, Dixie.
Of her many accomplishments, Evelin was proudest of her family, especially her children Aino (Hayrettin) Kardestuncer, Maria (Paul) Fitze, Polly (Thomas) Hayden, Ida (Ed Ogren) Berris, G. Peter (Karen) Berris, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service was Dec. 3 at the Federated Church of Brooklyn, where she was a lifelong member. Donations: The Federated Church of Brooklyn.
John E. Trowbridge
HAMPTON — John E. Trowbridge, 70, of Hampton, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Born Nov. 21, 1947, in Hartford, son of the late John P. and Mary (Ryan) Trowbridge.
He was the husband of 47 years to Marjorie (Morse) Trowbridge, the love of his life, married March 21, 1970.
John always considered Hampton his home. In 1965, he graduated from Marianapolis Prep School. In 1971 he graduated from UConn with a degree in civil engineering. During the late 1960s, John spent summers fighting forest fires in Alaska, then in 1971 moved with Marjorie and newborn son, David, to Alaska to work for Alaska Architectural and Engineering in Fairbanks where they lived in the old Eskimo Museum. In 1972 he returned to home in Hampton and started his logging business. He built his house in 1980, where he and his crews supplied the 50,000 board feet of locally grown logs. Pikes Sawmill moved its sawmill up to the property and sawed the logs into lumber. It took 1 ton of nails hammered by the hands of family and friends to build the house.
John was the owner of Trowbridge Forest Products, working with his son David. For over 45 years, he led the industry in innovation both in equipment and markets. Being one of the first logging companies to export logs to Canada and overseas. In addition, he supplied wood to Mystic Seaport for the ships “Morgan” and “Amistad” which were used for masts, spores and planking. His business was built on integrity and honesty. Most importantly John cared. He cared about the men who worked for him, the resource and the landowners who trusted their forestland to him.
His love for the outdoors was demonstrated in every aspect of his life.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his son, David Trowbridge, his wife Julie and their daughter Rachel of Hampton; daughter Rebecca Trowbridge and her children Alex, Katie and Ian of Woodstock; siblings Peg Cutler of Woodstock, Jim Trowbridge (Cathy) of Eastford, Tom Trowbridge (Phyllis) of Brooklyn, Mary Lu Loving (Jeff) of Conifer, Colo.

Brant R. Kelly
FARMINGTON, N.H. — Brant R. Kelly, 49 of Farmington, formerly of Pomfret, died unexpectedly Nov. 30, 2017.
He was born April 2, 1968.
Brant was a graduate of Putnam High School and Eastern Connecticut State University. Brant loved all outdoor activities, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. Brant enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family and his dog Teddy. Brant was the previous owner of Kelly taxi in Hartford. He is the current owner of Kelly’s Satellite Installation. Brant belonged to the Victoire Club of Rochester, N.H.
Brant was predeceased by his mother Linda Kelly. He leaves his parents David and Anne Kelly of Pomfret, Terry and Emily Switzer of Burnsville, N.C.; siblings Brenda Ritzman (Brad) of San Antonio, Bryan Kelly of Pomfret; two half sisters Missy McCurry and Samantha Fender of Burnsville; two nieces and a nephew. Brant also leaves a special friend Lee Anne Petit of Farmington.
Arrangements are being handled by the New England Donor Services and The Cremation Society of New Hampshire. Donations: New England Donor Services, 60 First Ave. Waltham, MA. 02451. A private service will be held at a later date.
Mary A. Maciora
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Mary A (Mik) Maciora, 96, died Nov. 27, 2017, in Pittsfield.
She was born Nov. 17, 1921, to Ignacy M. and Helena E. ( Bykowska ) Mik in Meriden.
>She was. 1939 graduate of Meriden High School and. 1940 graduate of Laurel Business College, Meriden. She married Joseph G. Maciora on April 22, 1946. He died on July 18, 1998.
She visited the east coast of the USA and Montreal and Ottawa, Canada as well as her sister-in-law the late Helen Maciora Marion of Putnam, niece and her husband the late Dorothy and Louis Landini of Thompson.
She worked for MA Dept. of Social Services 1978-1989. She liked cooking, gardening, tatting and handiwork. She enjoyed the music of Mozart, Chopin and Handel and Strauss waltzes. She read spiritual books of Thomas, a Kempis, Thomas Merton and St. Edith Stein among others.
Survivors include her son and caregiver Joseph G. V. Maciora of Pittsfield; her granddaughter Susan M. Jacobs, her sister-in-law Helen J. Mik of California; nieces and nephews. Her daughter Mary G. Maciora-Jacobs died Aug. 26, 2017.
Jeffrey J. Peck
DANIELSON — Jeffrey J. Peck, 51, died unexpectedly Nov. 26, 2017, in his home.
He was born in Worcester and raised in Dudley.
He then lived in Putnam and Woodstock before moving to Danielson.
He graduated from Shepherd Hill Regional High School in Dudley in 1984, where he played on the varsity football team.
Mr. Peck first worked as a carpenter for the family business, Albert S. Peck Building in Dudley.
He was currently an iron worker for the Boston Irons Workers Local Union No. 7 in Boston, where he was employed for 20 years.
He was affectionately known as “Chin Strap” by his fellow workers.
A dutiful son, he visited his mother weekly during her last years.
A sports enthusiast, he cheered for the New England Patriots both at home and at the games in Foxboro with his Uncle Fred.
He enjoyed riding on his Harley Davidson.
He also enjoyed making his famous Manhattan clam chowder for family gatherings.
Jeff was a gentle soul with a big, loving heart.
He leaves three siblings, Albert J. Peck (Andrea) of N. Grosvenordale, Carol A. Boye of Latham, N.Y., and Darryl J. Peck (Caroline) of Dudley; three nephews, Timothy Peck and his partner Melissa Wyse of Pomfret, Daniel Peck of Northampton, Mass., and Benjamin Boye of Salt Lake City; a niece, Kimberly Lamoureux (Rob) of Middleton, Mass. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Alice (Biesiadecki) Peck and by a brother, William Peck.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 10 in Scanlon Funeral Service, E. Main Street, Webster, with a service at 4.
Burial will be private.
