PUTNAM— A Putnam Science Academy student, Alex Hutchins, won the Voice of Democracy audio-essay contest.
Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed essay.  Each year, nearly 40,000 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win their share of $2.1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
This year’s topic was “Why My Vote Matters.” At Putnam Science Academy, Language Arts classes used the prompt as an assignment to strengthen their writing and speaking skills. Seven Putnam Science Academy students entered their essays into the contest.
Hutchins’ essay will move on to be judged at the district level. If her essay wins at that level, it will be sent on to the state level, and from there the national level.
