June festivities

Amid the furious pace of graduation ceremonies, baccalaureate services, Project Graduation parties, Boys’ State, Flag Day and Father’s Day, the local American Legion teams managed to get the season off the ground.
American Legion, which plays a five week schedule from mid-June through late July, features three local teams.  TriTown American Legion, which plays its Sr. games at Tourtellotte Memorial High School and Jr. games at the Bentley Athletic Complex in Woodstock, is sponsored by Putnam AL Post #13, Thompson Post #67 and Woodstock Post #111.  Danielson plays its home games at Owen Bell Park in Dayville and Moosup, sponsored by AL Post #91, plays at Plainfield High School.
TriTown and Danielson played and won last week, while Moosup, composed primarily of players from Plainfield High School opens play this week.  The Moosup team was getting organized following Plainfield High School’s run to the semifinals of the CIAC Class M Tournament.
Early Victories Bode Well for Danielson & TriTown
TriTown AL Baseball under veteran coach Paul Faucher picked up a first-week victory over Ledyard-Pawcatuck after dropping its opening game against Niantic.
Graced by the presence of the American Legion Post #13 Honor Guard, TriTown held its annual opening day ceremony to kick off its home season on Flag Day, Saturday, June 14.  The Towners didn’t disappoint their fans picking up a win in the lidlifter of a doubleheader, a 6-4 squeaker over L-P.
Winning hurler Josh Malboeuf, despite yielding 10 hits, hung on as his mates put up four big runs in a fifth inning uprising.  Sean Falvey was the big gun, going 3-for-3 with an RBI.  Ben Guimont and Ben Ross contributed doubles to the winning cause, while Kyle Tyler added two hits.
The second game was a different story as L-P touched up TriTown pitching for 22 hits in picking up a lopsided 13-2 victory.  J.P. Bergeron and Nick Foucault had doubles in the loss.  Earlier in the week the Towners were shutout by Niantic on the road 9-0.  TriTown is 1-2 after three games.
Danielson after winning one game in a three-game set with New London, swept a doubleheader from Montville as it started season play at 3-2 after the first week.
Corey Sipios was the winning pitcher in the first game 7-1 win over Montville.  He limited Montville to four hits.  In the second game of the twinbill Ben Rumrill tossed a nifty two-hit shutout, silencing Montville 6-0.
In its opening series against New London, Danielson was dropped twice 5-2 in eight innings and 10-3 but managed to shutout NL 3-0 behind the tosses of winning pitcher Travis Zurowski.  Zurowski tossed a nifty two hitter and received offensive support from Tre Belanger and Rumrill.
TriTown Juniors Off to Slow Start
The TriTown American Legion Junior Baseball program opened its season with a tight 4-3 win over Niantic but then lost three in a row to go 1-3 after one week of action.  Ryan Gadoury went the distance in the opener, scattering five hits and striking out five Niantic hitters.  Evan Tremblay had a pair of hit and Jared Carignan contributed a double in support of Gadoury.
Following a pair of losses to Niantic, the Jr. Towners of coach Dan Durand travelled to Ledyard where they lost a heart breaker to Ledyard-Pawcatuck 2-1.
AL Sr. Record: Danielson 3-2; TriTown 1-2; Moosup 0-0.  AL Jr. Record: TriTown 1-3; Moosup 0-0.
