Academy
prep still
winning
The Woodstock Academy Gold prep basketball team continued its winning ways in the first session of the Basketball Hoopfest at the South End Community Center in Springfield, Mass., Dec. 16.
The Centaurs, the consensus No. 1 prep team in the nation, held off Sunrise Christian Academy, 91-87, for their 16th consecutive victory.
Tre Mitchell led the way with a double-double, 18 points and 10 boards, while Luis Rodriguez and Ty Perry both scored 15 points.
But it was the defense that made the most difference. Mitchell was tough inside and got Sunrise Christian’s Isaiah Chandler, who was giving the Centaurs fits inside, in foul trouble.
The Centaurs were also able to corral Wichita State commit, Chance Moore.
Moore scored 42 points in the previous game in Springfield for Sunrise Christian and scored the first 13 points of the game for his team against the Centaurs. But the combination of Dibaji Walker, Marquis Moore and Luis Rodriguez held Chance Moore to 12 points the remainder of the way and to only two second-half baskets. Chance Moore finished with 25 points.
The Centaurs also downed New Hampton in Springfield Dec. 15, 80-71.
Perry led the way with 30 points in the win while Dibaji Walker and Tre Mitchell each added nine.
“He scored in every way possible. He dunked, hit 3’s, he just carried us,” said Centaurs coach Tony Bergeron.
Overall, Bergeron was satisfied with the first session.
“We trailed the majority of both games and came back to win against two nationally ranked teams. New Hampton is a traditional power and Sunrise Christian is building. I’m very happy,” Bergeron added.
Blue downs Capital Prep Harbor
The Centaurs Blue prep squad won its fourth straight game, taking an easy 102-57, win over Capital Prep at the Alumni Fieldhouse Dec. 16.
Chicago native Paul Kingsley was the top scorer for a first time this season for the Centaurs (9-6) with 25 points while Tom Van Westendorp and The Woodstock Academy’s own, Sam Majek, each added eight points. Skylar Kooyenga added seven points in the win.
