Feb. 1, Pomfret School and Marianapolis Prep squared off to settle the title of the “Jam On The Hill” Girls’ Invitational Basketball Tournament that began back on Dec. 16.  Pomfret came out victorious.
In the four-team tournament hosted by Pomfret School, Marianapolis and Pomfret both went into the final day with identical 2-0 records.  They had both beaten Berkshire School from Sheffield, Mass., and St. Mark’s School from Southborough, Mass.
Due to a scheduling conflict with Pomfret, who was also competing in the Loomis Chaffee holiday tournament at the same time, the championship game between Pomfret and Marianapolis had to be postponed.  With a regular season matchup scheduled for Jan. 1, both coaches decided to make that game the championship game.  So, with trophies on the line, Pomfret traveled to Marianapolis Feb. 1 to complete the odyssey.
Right from the start, it was Pomfret who dominated the boards and left Marianapolis with limited second chance opportunities.  Pomfret’s Zenab Keita and Maura Hall both pulled down nine rebounds each, and the Pomfret defense, led of Alyson Chase’s three steals and Keita’s three blocked shots set the tone for the game.  Although Marianapolis was able to muster 15 points in the first half to keep the game close, Pomfret’s Megan Gaudreau started to hit three-points shots and stretch the Pomfret lead.
Ten different Pomfret players contributed to the scoring, led by Gaudreau’s 18 points and Keita’s 10.  The final score was Pomfret 57 and Marianapolis 26.  The MVP trophy for the “Jam On The Hill” Tournament was awarded to Pomfret’s Zenab Keita for her strong performance over the course of the whole tournament.  Marianapolis’s record now stands at 12-3 while Pomfret’s remains unblemished at 17-0.
