Boys’ Varsity Squash

Pomfret  4   Portsmouth Abbey  3
Portsmouth Abbey brought their A game to the Corzine Athletic Center, but the boys dug deep and turned the tide to prevail 4-3.  In first round play, the team quickly found itself on the defensive as Nick Brewer (0-3) and Will Castagna (1-3) lost close matches, encountering hard-working, patient adversaries who kept them off balance with tight rails and deep cross courts.  Fortunately, Jack Wheatley picked up the pace and employed intelligent shot-making to win 3-1.  In second round play, Sujat Barua quickly dispatched his opponent to tie the match up at 2-2.  Brian Mullen put the team ahead with a well-played 3-0 win, tiring out his opponent by using all corners of the court and playing with the poise of a veteran in his first year of squash.  Unfortunately, after taking the first game, David Im could not find his rhythm, losing 1-3.  That left the match in the arms of co-captain Chris MacKay.  After losing the first game, Chris used an array of shots to prevail in a close match against a persevering adversary 3-1 (10-12, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9).  Team Record:  7-6

Girls’ Varsity Hockey

Pomfret 2 Cushing 1
Girls’ hockey won their fourth in a row as the Griffins continue to stay in the playoff hunt. With three girls out with the stomach bug, the Griffins needed to come together and really focus on team today. There were countless different line combinations and everyone on the bench saw time in the game. All four defensewomen (Bytalan, Fones, Herrick and MacArthur) were focused on making quick breakout passes and strong neutral zone regroups. This not only strengthened Pomfret’s defensive zone, but also generated offensive attacks. The Griffins got a lot of shots on net in the first, but were unable to solve Cushing’s goalie. Griffin held the Penguins to four shots on net. With 3:40 remaining in the second period, Melissa Haganey sent a pass to Ashley Anctil streaking across the neutral zone. Anctil used her as a screen as sniped one just inside low far post to put the Griffins up by one.  Three minutes later Pomfret found the back of the net again. Izzy Regine was skating hard and forechecking with intensity. Nataly Maloney stepped up to the challenge of being moved from defense to forward today and scored the eventual game winner off a fantastic feed by Cassie Catlow.  Pomfret used our speed to our advantage and Cushing was forced to take five penalties on the day. The powerplay units were operating well, moving the puck and driving to the net. Samantha Slotnick worked some great give and goes with Cassie Catlow and Melissa Haganey. Olivia Arnold was tenacious on the powerplay looking for loose pucks in front.  Cushing cut the lead to one goal in the third.  Kelsey O’Sullivan turned aside 16 shots on the day in net and needed to make some key saves to preserve the victory.
