The St. Mary Hawks won the Norwich Diocesan Tournament last weekend, with wins over St. John of Old Saybrook (51-25) in the semifinals, and St. James of Danielson (51-26) in the finals.
The Hawks received contributions from many players and showed a complete team effort.  Will Bourgeois was named MVP for the Hawks, who had many players deserving of accolades.  John McGinn rebounded in double figures both games, while scoring a total of 16 points.  Austin Miller played excellent defense all weekend and chipped in 14 points.  Point guard Trent Peters continues to direct the team offensively dishing out double-figure assists and scoring 19 points.  Bourgeois also had double-digit rebounds each game, making numerous steals while scoring 28 points.
The Hawks have qualified for the New England Diocesan Tournament in Bridgeport, and play Springfield, Mass., at 10:15 a.m. March 27. The (21-0) Hawks are hoping to continue their excellent play at the next level.
Head coach Mike Bourgeois is confident that the team will represent their Diocese well and he is expecting the team to be competitive.  The Hawks have been scrimmaging many local teams, as well as teams from Holyoke, Mass., and Exeter, R.I., and including the undefeated Kelly Middle School of Norwich, in preparation of the New England Tournament.
Bourgeois said he is pleased with his team’s performance against these elite teams and feels like the team is ready to play at the next level.
Bourgeois said, “This team has excellent chemistry and they enjoy playing together.  They play with a cohesiveness that is such a pleasure to watch.  The most amazing aspect about the Hawks is the total lack of ego, which is obvious in the way the players give up shots to pass to another teammate.  This season has been truly amazing...one that I am proud to be a part of.”
