Elias G. Farquhar Jr.,

WOODSTOCK — Elias Grant Farquhar Jr., 55, of Rocky Hill Road, died March 22, 2010, surrounded by his family at the William W. Backus Hospital, Norwich. He was the husband of Deborah (Glass) Farquhar and they married April 10, 1976. Born Sept. 16, 1954, in Putnam, he was the son of Elias G. and Charlotte (Amidon) Farquhar Sr.
He was a sales representative working for the AGC Glass in Fall River, Mass.  A member of the Putnam Lodge #46, AM & FM in South Woodstock, served as Master in 1999 and was a Trustee; he was involved with many lodge activities. He also served as an adviser for the Israel Putnam Chapter of the DeMolay. Elle was past president of the Blue Lodge Council, a member of the 4 Scottish Rite bodies in the Valley of Norwich and three York Rite bodies of North Windham, served as an officer Trinity Chapter #9 RAM and St. John’s Commandery  #11 KT.  Elle was a member of the First Congregational Church of Woodstock, serving as a deacon, trustee and on other committees and boards.
Elle coached soccer, basketball, baseball and was an umpire. He was active with Boy Scouts, as a Tiger and Cub Scout leader. He served the Town of Woodstock, as a member of the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Assoc., the Financial Board, Fire Police, EMT and ambulance driver. A member of the Woodstock Lions Club, served as president in 2003. Elle served on the Board of the Connecticut Glass Dealers Assoc. for 15 years, and was secretary.
He leaves, in addition to his wife of 34 years Deborah, his sons Scott Farquhar and his wife Marcia of South Killingly, Ian Farquhar of Woodstock; grandchildren: Mackenzie, Laura, Elias IV.

Leo J.  Duchesne,

N. GROSVENORDALE — Leo J. Duchesne, 75 of  Rachel Drive  died March 27, 2010, in UMass Memorial Healthcare.  Born in 1934 in N. Grosvenordale, he was the son of the late Joseph and Regina (Hebert) Duchesne.
Mr. Duchesne worked as a supervisor in the packaging department for Superior Bakery for 40 years.
He leaves a brother-in-law, George Albetski of N. Grosvenordale; aunt Matilda Duchesne of N. Grosvenordale; cousins.  He also leaves his dog Sam and his cats Archie and Edith.  He was the brother of the late Raymond Duchesne and Gloria Albetski.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Leo’s family from 9 to 10a.m. March 31 in the Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main St., N. Grosvenordale, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 .a.m in St. Joseph Church, N. Grosvenordale.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Albertine G. Larose,

N. GROSVENORDALE — Albertine G. Larose, 83, of Riverside Drive, died March 23, 2010, in Day Kimball Hospital.  Born in 1926 in Putnam, she was the daughter of the late John and Yvonne (Brunette) Gomes.
Mrs. Larose worked at Crabtree and Evelyn as an assembler.  She also worked at Anglo Fabrics, Cluett & Peabody, and Godzik’s Market.  She was a communicant of St.  Joseph’s Church.  She enjoyed polka music and dancing.  She also enjoyed gardening, birds.
She leaves her sons, Leo Larose Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert Larose and his wife Cheryl of Eastford, Ernest Larose and his wife Debra of N. Grosvenordale; brothers, Albert Gomes of N. Grosvenordale, and Arthur Gomes of Charlton, Mass.; sisters, Theresa Evans of Thompson, Delores Levine of Montana, and Janet Peckham of Thompson; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial was March 29 in St. Joseph Church, N. Grosvenordale, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main St., N. Grosvenordale.

Arlene Godley,

PUTNAM — Arlene Godley, 71, of Putnam, died March 24, 2010, at Regency Heights in Danielson after a lengthy illness. Born April 16, 1938, on the family farm on Green Hollow Road in the Moosup section of Plainfield, she was the daughter of the late George & Jeanne (Desjardins) Tetreault. Arlene was raised in Plainfield and attended Plainfield schools until moving to Hartford and working as a telephone operator, later moving back home where she worked energetically raising her only son, “The Sunshine of her life”, Glenn Godley
She leaves her son Glenn and his wife Melissa Godley; grandsons Josh and Travis, all of Putnam; siblings Frances (Frannie) Jernstrom and her husband Roland of Plainfield, Constance (Connie) Maurice of Brooklyn, Claire Gaudreau and her husband James of Rogers, George Tetreault of Danielson, Gene Barriere and his wife RenĂ©e of Sterling. She was predeceased by her siblings Theresa Thompson, Theodore  Tetreault, Roger Tetreault and Lucien (Jimmy) Tetreault.

Norma Robbins,

POMFRET CENTER — Norma Robbins, 92,  died  March 20, 2010.
She was a local legacy in Pomfret where she lived for more than 62 years. Born Norma Muriel Moore on May 6, 1917, in Brooklyn,  she was the daughter of Franklyn Moore of Woodstock and Lillian House of Canterbury. Norma grew up a tomboy riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle furnished by her dad who operated northeastern Connecticut’s only Harley, Indian, and Henderson dealership.  Graduating from Killingly High School’s Class of 1934 Norma graduated from Joseph Lawrence School of Nursing in New London.  She did post-graduate work at New York University. She worked for more than 40 years at: Mitchell Isolation Hospital (now Mitchell College) in New London, the Veterans Hospital in Rocky Hill.  At the beginning of WWII, she was Head Nurse at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, New London, where she met her first husband, William Taylor. Following the war, Norma divorced and returned to the Veteran’s Hospital. There she met and married a sailor, James Edward Robbins, of Middletown.  Later, Norma was Director of Nurses at Pine Rest Convalescent Hospital in Putnam. During the 1960s and early ‘70s Norma was the school nurse at The Pomfret School.  She became a public health nurse with the state Health Department in Hartford, where she was assigned to clinics at Day Kimball Hospital, Backus Hospital, Windham Memorial Hospital, Hartford Hospital and the Cardiac Clinic at Yale New Haven Hospital. Norma finished her career as director of Nurses at Norcliff Convalescent Home in Brooklyn.
She served on the Pomfret Democratic Town Committee, was elected to the Board of Finance and Inland Wetlands Commission, and served as a Justice of the Peace. She was Pomfret Registrar of Voters In 1996, she was awarded the Democracy in Action Award by the Connecticut General Assembly. On May 2, 2004, the Connecticut General Assembly dedicated a day in her honor.
For 20 years, Norma opened her home to foreign students attending Annhurst College in Woodstock and to young adults in need of  support. She was a Boston Red Sox, Celtics, and UConn Huskies fan.
She leaves her sons Franklyn Thomas  Taylor of Harrington, Maine, and James Edward Robbins Jr. and his wife Nora of Pomfret Center; grandchildren, Kristin Taylor Costello of Rocklin, California and Jonathan Allen Taylor of Killingly.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Norma’s life will be held at 3 p.m. April 3 at Tyrone Farm, Pomfret. Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam.

Evelyn Quigley,
former nurse
POMFRET — Evelyn (Corcoran) Quigley, 88, formerly of Fox Hill Road, died Monday, March 22, 2010, in Coventry, R.I.  She was the  wife of the late Andrew Quigley.  Born in 1921 in Killingly, she was the daughter of the late James and Anita (Billings) Corcoran.
Mrs. Quigley graduated from St. Vincent School of Nursing in Worcester, and later worked as a nurse for Day Kimball Hospital and other health care providers.  She also worked as a clerk in the Pomfret Post Office. Mrs. Quigley enjoyed cooking and traveling.
She leaves two sons, Michael Quigley of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Andrew Quigley Jr. of Pomfret; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Quigley.
The Mass of Christian Burial was March 26, in Most Holy Trinity Church, Pomfret, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Putnam. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.

Ellen J. LaMond
PUTNAM — Ellen J. LaMond, 64, of Pomfret Street died March 19, 2010, in Worcester. Born Feb. 4, 1946, in Newark, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Kenneth R. and Leona (Wilshire) LaMond. 
She has made her home in the area for many years.
She leaves her former husband and friend Lionel Hewitt; siblings, Sally Emerson, Billy LaMond, Jean Rose, Cynthia LaMond.   Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam.

Susan Murphy
Susan Bergsten Canfield Rock Murphy, 55,  died March 21, 2010, after a brief  battle with cancer.
She worked more than 20 years with DMR for the state of Connecticut, a tough job which she loved. She loved reading, gardening, designing home plans and gardenscapes, and mostly spend time with her grandson.
She leaves her children Elisabeth Canfield McGuckin and her husband Bryan of Cleveland, Michael Rock of Putnam, Rebecca Theriaque  her husband James; grandson LJ  (James Robert) Theriaque, also of Putnam; parents Robert and Gerri Bergsten of Richlands N.C.; siblings Victor (Ann) Bergsten of Bolton, Robert (Beth) Bergsten of Andover, Deborah (Art) Jones of New Britain, Nita (John) Ball of Las Vegas. She was predeceased by her grandparents, aunts and uncles and the love of her life Davey. A memorial service was March 26 at St Philips Episcopal Church, Putnam.
Donations: American Cancer Society or Hospice of Connecticut. The New Haven Funeral Service handled arrangements.
