POMFRET --- The varsity softball team traveled to Suffield April 2 and came home with a 6-1 win over the Tigers --- its first victory over the Tigers in many years. Katie Peverada was the game MVP, going 3-for-3, scoring three times, and making some key defensive plays, while Megan Gaudreau pitched a great game in her Pomfret debut, allowing only six hits over seven innings.
Katie led off in the second inning with a single to right, advanced to second on Sarah Steinke’s infield hit, and came around on Ashley Anctil’s base hit to left. Some smart base running by Steinke created another run and put us ahead 2-0. Two innings later, Peverada singled to right again and went to third on a hit by Hallie O’Connor before coming home on a Steinke ground ball. At the mid-way point, it was 3-0 Pomfret and Suffield was still looking for their first base hit.
Suffield strung three hits together in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-1, but that was all they got. Meg Gaudreau was strong on the mound, exhibiting excellent control and walking only three hitters all day. Catcher Sam Slotnick helped snuff out Suffield’s one rally with a great throw to Peverada, nailing a Suffield base runner who was trying to steal second.
In the sixth, Pomfret gave Megan three more insurance runs. Maura Hall reached first on a dropped third strike, and then Peverada doubled to center. When Hall ran through Mr. Diaz’s stop sign at third base and scored on a close play, Katie took third on the throw. She then scored on another O’Connor single, and Hallie came around soon after on Ashley Anctil’s second hit of the afternoon.
