POMFRET --- The boys' varsity lacrosse team opened the 2010 season with a thrilling 8-6 win over Kimball Union Academy in a neutral site matchup at Cushing. Both teams swapped leads several times and stellar goaltending at both ends made for an exciting game. Trailing 6-5, Chris MacKay (5,3) knotted the game at six with 6:11 remaining. Over the final several minutes, Pomfret’s Rob Sassone (16 saves) and KUA’s Mike Maggiore in the goal came up huge to keep the game tied. With 1:25 remaining, Tyler Campbell (1,0) took a cross crease feed from MacKay and beat the diving Maggiore for the game winner. KUA won the faceoff and got one last great look, but Sassone made the save and chucked it the length of the field. KUA gained possession but AJ Bourdon (0,1) checked it from the goalie’s stick as the ball flopped to MacKay alone on the crease and he buried the empty net goal for icing on the cake. MacKay had a breakout day as he had a part in all eight Pomfret goals.
Pomfret jumped out to an early lead when defenseman, Jon Perekrests (0,1) carried the ball on a clear and found MacKay on the crease. KUA then scored to tie it just over a minute later. Pomfret scored three times in the second quarter and kept KUA off the board for nearly eighteen minutes until they scored their second extra man goal at :15 of the quarter. The third quarter was not our best of the day. KUA controlled the play to take a 5-4 lead after three. Will Simonds (1,0) had a nice finish in tight to give us some momentum back and knot the game at five. KUA scored for the last time at 7:53 before Pomfret’s defense took over to keep them off the board for the duration.
Many players contributed to the win as the Pomfret defense was solid all afternoon forcing many turnovers with tight pressure and a relentless riding effort. Will Dana, in his first varsity start, was solid on clears while Perekrests and Chris Emerson were a force on close defense. Jack Nicholson and Shane Dunphy were tough on groundballs all day. Adam Rimmer may not have any stats in the scoring column, but his tenacious work in the midfield, and winning key faceoffs when we needed them most, helped seal the win. Teddy Driscoll put in a solid effort and scored a key shorthanded goal in the first half. Mackay’s performance carried the Pomfret offense particularly at key times of the day. Rob Sassone did well in the net --- in his first-ever contest as a goalie.
