It's all a
matter of
pitching
WOODSTOCK — The Woodstock Academy softball team played two games last week, winning one and losing the next. April 21 the Centaurs beat Putnam at Murphy Park 23-2 in six innings and April 23 they lost to NFA 5-0.
Against Putnam, the Centaurs jumped out to an 8-0 lead before giving two runs back to Putnam in the bottom of the second inning.  Putnam scored without recording a hit as Academy  pitcher Adelis Concepcion struggled with her control, walking two in the inning and hitting three consecutive batters.  She regained form and was able to strikeout three batters in the inning to stop the bleeding.  Conception struck out 10 batters in the game and was helped by several Academy batters.  Junior Justina Thoma did most of the damage, going four for five, including a triple and long homerun to left field.  She drove in six runners on the day.  Sophomore catcher Julia Oleksy also had four hits.
The Centaurs could not generate the same run support playing NFA. That was due to NFA senior pitcher Tess Rubega.  Rubega allowed only one hit for the game and recorded 11 strikeouts.
“She was dominant.  She is one of the top few pitchers in the ECC and we struggled to get the bat on the ball,” said Academy head coach David Walley.
The lone hit for Woodstock was contributed by Justina Thoma as she continues to get her timing back, coming off a shoulder injury. NFA was helped by a Woodstock error in the first which would have ended the inning, that was followed by a two-run triple by Teresa Mailhot.  That was all NFA needed with Rubega in the circle.
“We have a fairly young team and we are trying to make them understand that they have to come with an intense, competitive mindset from the beginning of the game,” said Walley, “Against a team like NFA you cannot give them extra outs.”
The Centaurs will look to get on the winning track this week with three tough games against Old Lyme, East Lyme, and Waterford.
