WOODSTOCK — It was all about the scoring last week as the Centaurs’ baseball team took home two wins in three outings.
First up last week was a 3-1 loss to Lyman April 19. It was a very good game, according to head coach Dave Austin. “We had only four hits. It was a pretty good pitchers’ duel,” he said.
Paul Lindstrom pitched, giving up four hits. He struck out three and walked three. Woodstock’s lone run came when Kevin Bonitz was knocked in on a double.
“Someone wins and someone loses, but it was a very good game,” Austin said.
Up against Putnam April 21, the Centaurs fared much much better — in fact they scored all of their 11 runs, in the 11-2 win, in the first three innings.
John Naughton pitched five innings for the Centaurs and gave up no runs. He struck out six. “He pitched very very well,” Austin said. Jeff Higgins pitched one inning as did Brady Matteau.
Bonitz had two hits, Cody DeGray had 1, Lindstrom had two including a triple. In addition, Gage Gibeault had two hits, Chris Mayhew had one and so did Brian Jones.
“John set the tone with his pitching,” Austin said. The team was able to capitalize on some Putnam mistakes. The Centaurs scored enough runs to insure the lead and “then left it at that,” Austin said.
Putnam was “a little outmanned,” Austin said. Austin said he pulled in some of the starters and played a lot of kids.
The game against NFA April 23 was a little closer in the scoring with the Centaurs winning 9-8. Pitching figured heavily in this game. Kevin Bonitz was awarded the win, coming in relief of Jeff Higgins. Lindstrom saved the game, pitching the last inning and striking out three.
Mayhew had two doubles, Lindstrom had two hits including a double, Wyatt Gibeault had two hits and Higgins had the big hit of the game “bringing in the insurance run,” Austin said.
“It was a complete team effort,” he added.
The Centaurs are 5-3 overall, 1-1 in the ECC Large Division and 4-2 in the ECC overall.
