PUTNAM — April 24 the Putnam High School softball team played Tourtellotte Memorial High School, losing 15-0.
Although  the Lady Clippers played their best defensive game of the year, they still lost. “I’m proud of the way we are handling ourselves on defense,” said head coach Stephen Smith. “If you consider that we lost our starting shortstop, Kaylee Shippee, to a severe ankle sprain in the April 21 game (out for 2 weeks) and our starting third basemen, Megan Heaney, with a knee injury, we played pretty well.” Shippee will be out for two weeks and Heaney will be out for a game.
Cori Sasinowski and Amanda Masztal filled in for the two injured players and Taylor Trudeau stepped in at shortstop.
“Now if we could only hit the ball... We’ve been having problems hitting the ball,” Smith added.
The Lady Clippers had only one hit for the game. “If we can just get on base and make some things happen I think we would be having a much better season,” Smith said.
April 21, against the Woodstock Centaurs, Putnam went down 23-2. Putnam’s pitcher was Stephanie Baumuller. Putnam’s Masztal had one hit. Trudeau had one and Shippee had one before leaving the game in the top of the fourth by ambulance with a severely sprained ankle.
April 20 the girls played Killingly High School losing 19-9.
With Killingly leading 5-1 going into the fourth, the Redgals broke it open, scoring six runs to take a 11-1 lead. Putnam fought back scoring three in the sixth and five in the seventh to eventually fall 19-9. The winning pitcher was Spirit Souza who pitched five strong innings, striking out 10 and allowing three hits. The Clippers were led by senior captain Amanda masztal who went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
The Clippers’ next game was April 27 at Lyman High School.
