EASTFORD --- Firefighter safety for the Eastford Independent Fire Company No. 1 will get a boost courtesy of a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.
John Paquin, the department's fire chief, said the grant, which totals $102,838, will be used to buy self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighters.
Currently the crew is using "Scott air pack" type apparatus that is 20 years old. "It's still compliant," Paquin said, but it's out of current standards.
Paquin said the bidding process will begin shortly and he expects to have 13 new packs and paraphernalia and a compressor to fill them with air within the next three months.
