Pomfret School
Boys’ varsity soccer
Pomfret - 2, Wdsk. Academy - 1
In a Sept. 8 scrimmage the boys traveled to Woodstock to take on a tough opponent who was in the midst of the final week of their own pre-season and came away with a 2-1 win. Pomfret scored first on a nice goal by Chris Grandi as he fought off a defender and broke away. Grandi took a nice touch and beat the goalie with a quick low shot. Pomfret played well in the first half significantly out-shooting Woodstock. Then, in the second half, we lost our composure a bit and started to go long ball. Our midfield play and marking were not what they should have been. Woodstock scored a break-away goal of their own with some miscommunication in the back. Then, with about 10 minutes to go, President Ray Zeek got the ball in the offensive half and from his spot as a marking back beat two defenders on the dribble and cracked it upper left for the game winning goal. It was Zeek’s first game in two years.
