Marianapolis 5 Lawrence 2
Sept. 17 Marianapolis opened their 2010 season with a huge win 5-2 over Lawrence Academy of the ISL league. Midfield senior Zack Morin opened the scoring with a lovely rebound volley. Senior Striker (Captain) Ben Gustavson lofted a beautiful chip over the Lawrence goal keeper to give the Knights a lead they would not relinquish just before the halftime. Sophomore Nick Borowski tallied twice in the second half on assists from Morin and Gustavson. Lawrence derew within 2 goals with a great header but Gustavson was pulled down in the area late in the match and converted the penalty kick to salt the game away. Senior Peter Bogusewski saved a penalty kick with no time on the clock to further frustrate Lawrence. Senior (2 time all state ) Trevor Ouellet anchored the midfield and Coach Gustavson awarded the game ball to Sophomore Eric Bordua who defended brilliantly at stopper despite breaking his nose 4 days earlier. Coach Esad Darman stated after the game that “Ben Gustavson was on fire, I can tell you that” and then awarded the entire team a game ball. New international arrivals Isauro Figueirido (Brazil) and Samuel Elizonda (Mexico) also played very well in the midfield. Greg Diaz was sensational at sweeper using his tremendous speed to thwart the Lawrence attackers. This was one of the Golden Knights great season opening wins in a long time.
Marianapolis 5 Hyde (Maine) 0
Sept. 18 the Golden Knights picked up right where they left off Sept. 17 with their stunning 5 goal winning performance against Lawrence Academy by scoring 3 quick goals en route to a 5-0 shutout of Hyde Maine. Senior (Captain) Ben Gustavson tallied 3 times in the first twenty minutes of the match as the Knights jumped out to a decisive lead. Sophomore Nick Borowski assisted on two of the goals and Trevor Ouellet had an assist as well. Sophomore Kyle Higginbottom scored a wonderful header off a great cross by senior Kyle Duethorn late in the first half and senior Pat Shea finished the scoring midway through the second period. Seniors Peter Boguszewski and Nick Haddad combined for the shutout. The second string played most of the second half. Coach Darman told the team after the game that despite the strong performances this weekend much more focus will be required since it is a very long season playing in two leagues and trying to qualify for the New England (NEPSAC) tournament.

Pomfret 1, Groton 2
The boys traveled to Groton for their second to last scrimmage of the season Sept. 15 and came away with a 2-1 loss. It was the best we have played against the talented Groton program in the last five years. They used a different formation than others teams and we adjusted quite well and quickly—a sign of a veteran team. Then we played our game for most of the first half and disrupted the rhythms of the well-coached Groton side. We scored in the middle of the half on a flick on header by Charlie Grunner off a dead ball serve by Kyle Lasewicz. Groton came back and scored with two minutes left in the half to even the score. They then scored in the last ten minutes off a dead ball flick on of their own.
Pomfret did not let down and traded offensive thrust in the second half—though we tired a bit and resorted to long ball on the wing. We marked exceptionally well—our best game of the year in that way, and really played some nice controlled ball. Coach Deary and I are excited about this team. Groton plays the same way as a majority of the teams we are going to face and we made them play our game for a while. This team is tough, competitive, and takes great pride in what they do. There is a lot of energy and a lot to like with this team.
Cross Country
The first step in any journey is usually the most difficult. Sept. 15 was Pomfret’s first “step” of the season and the competition was intense. We had both a varsity and a JV race, and the winning times in each 3.1 mile race spoke for themselves. The winning time in the JV race was 18:48 after a 5:46 first mile. The winning time for the varsity race was 16:55 with an approximate 5:20 first mile.
Team Scores: Belmont Hill 15; Tabor Academy 46; Pomfret School 90; Thayer Academy 107; Roxbury Latin 117; Rivers School 138.
In the face of this level of competition, Pomfret runners held their own. First, in the JV race, Josh Roemer-Ingles finished 23rd in a field of 80 runners and Daniel Kellaway was 33rd.
In the varsity race we had two runners in the top 15. Bobby Turner finished 10th in a field of 42, and Oliver Finley fought all the way to the finish line to claim the 15th spot by just hundredths of a second. Captain TJ Deary finished 15 seconds later to claim the 17th spot.
