Pomfret School

Pomfret 7, St. Mark’s 0
The girls’ varsity soccer team coasted to a 7-0 victory against St. Mark’s in the final preseason scrimmage on Sept. 15. The team came out strong and Carly Scott put the Griffins up 1-0 just 4 minutes into the game with a left-footed ball that she buried from the top of the box. Caroline Kozlowski scored the next goal off a great cross from Jamie Samociuk. That ended the scoring for the first half despite a flurry of chances that were denied by the St. Mark’s keeper. The team came out in the second half determined to be more efficient in the final third and that they were behind a trio of goals from Andi Nicholson, all calmly tucked in behind the keeper on 1v1 opportunities. Jamie Samociuk finished with a goal of her own after she put one in the upper 90 from 25 yds. out. The final goal of the day, and the first of her career, came from Izzy Regine off a great head ball from Liv Dalton-Hoffman. The Pomfret back line was solid all afternoon and didn’t allow St. Mark’s a shot on goal. Pomfret will host Middlesex in their first game of the season on Friday at 4:15.
Cross Country
Sept. 15 the girls’ team traveled to Tabor to compete in its first invitational — for a few, their very first race. We prepared by sharing our individual and team goals: placing 1st, placing 15th, and passing an opponent in the final 100 meters. Team Places: Thayer, 1st, Rivers, 2nd, Tabor, 3rd, Pomfret, 4th.
Melinda Buell and Jaclyn Tules led the runners through the starting gate, making good on goals of a fast and fine start. As the pack of 60 plus runners began to spread, Tules established herself as 2nd, while Annalena Lieb vied for the 15th spot. Veteran runner Isabelle Lofquist ran one of her fastest first miles — turning into one of her fastest races. Rookies Buell, Margaret Therrien, Leena Aslam, and Priya Patel stayed close to opponents from Tabor, Thayer, and Rivers and the competitive spirit paid off as each of our new runners finished strong, establishing solid PRs.
Meanwhile, Tules took the lead over Thayer’s Evelina Yakimovich in the final mile. The long, steady kick led Tules to finish 1st with a time of 20:54, a secure 25 seconds ahead of Yakimovich. Behind Tules, Lieb continued to battle for her goal of 15th AND her goal of passing an opponent in the final stretch. Lieb turned the corner in the 15th spot, approximately five meters behind the 14th runner, and launched into a sprint… maybe, the interval workouts are nicht so schlimm after all. In what was a photo finish, Lieb wrangled 14th place from Rivers.
Hyde

Hyde 1, MacDuffie 0
Even with a temporary bus break down and several team members still unable to take the field, the Hyde School girls’ varsity soccer team earned its second victory of the season Sept. 18 at MacDuffie School.Hyde was able to control the field for much of the game with Mari Barnett ‘11 and Bryn Nolan ‘12 moving the ball through the midfield. Though the halftime score was 0-0, Hyde had the upper hand as the teams moved into the last forty minutes of play. With 29:40 left in the game, Nolan, outstanding all game, hustled to intercept a MacDuffie goal kick, blasting the ball past the keeper into the upper right corner of the net, giving Hyde the only goal of the game. MacDuffie worked to earn a few fast breaks, threatening the Hyde lead throughout the final minutes of the game, but Caitlyn Colley ‘11 and Marcy Altobello ‘13 maintained composure on defense to keep their opponent scoreless. Stand-in goal keeper Hope Eldridge ‘11 made the shut-out possible with nine saves.

Marianapolis 3 MacDuffie 0
The Marianapolis girls’ varsity soccer team finished strong in their first game of the season Sept. 15, winning 3-0 against MacDuffie on Wednesday. After a slow first half, the Golden Knights rallied the troops, with Marissa Iamartino, Carolyn Egan, and Kelsey Quinn scoring a goal within 5 minutes of each other. Congratulations to Laura Woodcock in her first ever appearance as goalie.
Volleyball
Marianapolis 3 MacDuffie 1
Sept. 15 after a slow start and a loss in the first set of the season the MPS girls’ varsity volleyball team was able to turn things around and pull out a 3-1 victory at MacDuffie. After shaking off the dust the Golden Knights improved their serving and passing significantly as the match went on. Finally in the 4th set the offense started to click and began to overpower the opposition. The final score stood at 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-14. MPS stands at 1-0 on the year.
Marianapolis 1 Worcester Acad. 3
Sept. 18 in their first home match of the season the MPS volleyball team fell to Worcester Academy 12-25, 12-25, 25-19, 24-26. The first two sets were not indicative of how evenly matched the Golden Knights and their rivals from Worcester are. Costly errors on the serve receive led to some long runs and lopsided scores in the first two games, but a belief that they were better than they were showing brought the team back in the 3rd and 4th sets. An offense anchored by Olivia Sage, Melanie Mills and Taylor Downs and a strong backcourt contribution from Jocelyn Cacciapouti, Becca Shea and Colette Houssan allowed MPS to force a 4th set and come within one point of a 5th and deciding set. Unfortunately, it was not to be and MPS fell to 1-1 on the year.
