Knights
beat Chase
by 3-2 score
By Coach Scott Sheridan
The Lady Golden Knights varsity volleyball team got over a major hurdle by defeating Chase Collegiate 3-2 at home Oct. 20.  Through 11 games only one team has been able to keep the Knights from posting at least one set on the scoreboard, showing they are not a team to be taken lightly. In spite the Vegas line starkly in the visitors favor, in front of a raucous crowd the Knights pulled out a come from behind victory with some clutch play.  The first two sets were close going 21-25 for Chase and then 25-21 for MPS. Then in the 3rd things took a turn for the worse.  At one point the score stood 16-3 in favor of the visitor, and the final set score was a lopsided 25-10 for Chase.  Somehow the Knights were able to put the shellacking behind them and came out strong in the 4th set, determined not to go down without a fight.  It was a replay of the 3rd set, just in the opposite direction.  MPS looked poised to force a 5th quickly when the score stood 22-11, and finally ended the set at 25-17.  The Knights took nothing to chance in the 5th set.  Although they lost the coin toss, that was the last loss they were going to suffer.  Receiving serve first, they sided out immediately and built a lead they would not relinquish, finishing the match 15-10 in the 5th.
Pomfret School
Soccer
Pomfret 1 Tabor 0
Oct. 20: The girls’ varsity soccer team traveled to Tabor and came away with a 1-0 win.  Pomfret created some good chances in the first half including a corner from Jamie that looked like it was headed in only to be redirected off the line by a Tabor defender.  There were a couple of dangerous crosses in the first half that we were unable to convert, one from Andi that appeared to have crossed over the goal line but was smothered by the Tabor keeper and a volley that was put just wide by Morgan Lasewicz.  Pomfret went into the half scoreless, but determined to get on the board in the second half. That score happened right away off a nice shot from Jamie at the top of the box that slid under Tabor’s diving keeper.  Unfortunately for Pomfret, that would remain the only score of the afternoon despite tenacious play from Dylan O’Hara both in the midfield and in the back, as well as Carly Scott in the back and Izzie Regine up top.  Pomfret moves to 7-2-1.
Hyde
Soccer
Hyde 0 Marianapolis 0
Oct. 23: With parents crowding the sidelines on a beautiful fall afternoon, the Hyde School girls’ varsity soccer team fumbled through 80 minutes of play to tie Marianapolis Preparatory School in a rematch of an earlier season game that favored the Wolf Pack.  Though the Hyde team outshot its opponent 16-11, Marianapolis became only the second team during the 2010 season to keep the Wolf Pack off the scoreboard completely.
Hyde saw great midfield play from Rianna Arellano ’12, whose vision of the field never fails to impress the sideline, and Mari Barnett ’11, who consistently supports her teammates both offensively and defensively.  Marcy Altobello ’13 also showed her improved level of play, supporting the offensive efforts of Bryn Nolan ’12, Sarah DeNunzio ’11, and Hope Eldridge ’11.  The defensive trio of Becca Katz ’12, Camryn Bindra ’13, and Caitlyn Colley ’11 remained steady and composed to keep almost all of Marianapolis’s shots on goal coming from outside the 18 yard box.  Hyde goalie Lara Cornelius ’11 also showed her skill development, picking up 11 saves.
