PUTNAM — Senior Guard Desmond Williams (Torrington) put up a game-high 33 points and six rebounds to lead the Putnam Science Academy boys’ basketball team to a 64-61 season-opening win over Masters Dec. 1 at PSA.
The Mustangs (1-0) never trailed in the win as Anthony Henry (Danbury) added 17 points, five rebounds and two blocks.  Also, Zaquan Nelson (Waterbury) added seven points and seven assists for the Mustangs.
“It was a really important win for us,” said PSA head coach Tom Espinosa. “Masters came in and really battled us for 32 minutes today. We need to figure out how to execute at a higher level and play with more confidence if we are going to get better.  You always want to win the first game of the season.”
PSA opened the game strong and the Mustangs built a 12-point advantage heading into halftime.
For the game, the Mustangs only could come up with 20 rebounds and turned the ball over 23 times. The Mustangs didn’t play their best basketball but got the win and moves onto a big weekend at the Hoop Mountain Classic.
