PUTNAM --- More than a year ago, passers-by noticed that the old tile roof at the former train station were being replaced. They sounded the alarm, telling Sheri Sochor, owner of the Sochor Art Gallery in Arts & Framing. Socher said she ran down to the Union Square renovation project and pulled 13 still-whole roof tiles, circa 1900, out of the rubble.
She then asked local famous artists to take a tile and create a work of art. The tiles are now for sale as a fund-raiser for the Putnam Arts Council to promote the arts.
Those not sold by spring will be up for auction at the spring art auction being planned.
"The tiles are part history, part art," Sochor said.
The artists who donated their talents include: Carroll Spinney of Woodstock, Oscar & Wormie; Tim Oliver of Woodstock, Jester (in gold and silver leaf); Nancy Dougherty of Pomfret, Bradley Playhouse & The Cosmic Cat; Julie Caprera of Webster, three tiles of Whimsical Chickens; Karen McFarlin of Woodstock, Cargill Falls; Donna O.S. Lange of Thompson, Under the apple Tree; Cindy Obert of Thompson; Thompson Hill; Bernice Harmyk of Pomfret, Flower Garden (sold); Ann Rosebrooks of N. Grosvenordale, Rotary Park; Jacquie Lucier of E. Killingly, Tulips; and Margot McLean of Thompson, 2 Birds on a Roof in Putnam, CT.
