Ice Hockey
Choate 4, GVH 1
Dec. 15: The girls’ varsity hockey suffered their first loss of the season against Choate. Choate, one of the top teams in Division 1 remained undefeated in their 4-1 win. The girls started out slow and never seemed to be able to catch up. Choate pressed early, Jaimie made good key saves to keep the game locked at 0. With 5 minutes left in the first, Choate scored on the powerplay. They went up 2-0 with just one minute left in the period.
Heading into the second, the girls knew they could play better. Just one minute into the second, first year Candace Lu scored to cut the lead 2-1.Choate responded back to go up 3-1 and then again a minute later to go up 4-1.
Later in the second, Pomfret had an opportunity to cut the lead on a 5 on 3 but were unable to capitalize. Alison Horst, Alex Gerew and Nataly Maloney all stepped up, played smart positionally, and made some great plays in the
third period. Ashley Anctil, Jordan Lipson and Cassie Catlow all worked hard to try to generate opportunities, but were gassed.
Basketball
Dec 17 - Rivers Holiday Tournament
Game #1: The girls traveled to Rivers School for the opportunity to take on Philip’s Andover for the first time. The scouting report was a bit intimidating as we knew of their 6’4" and 6"1" inch forwards who were basically impossible to stop, and the girls, specifically Anyolina Montilla and Whitney Willingham, were charged with limiting them to as few rebounds and as few second chance opportunities as possible. On the flip side, our goal was to run the fast break as often as possible, hoping we could combat height with speed. Defensively, the girls did a good job doing what was asked, holding an offensively talented team to under 40 points until the remaining 3 minutes of play. Our defense, however, did not help to generate our offense as the girls looked afraid to drive the paint and instead settled for a lot of outside shooting. Though good things did happen when we took the ball inside - Jamie Samociuk posting up and getting a nice bucket from the block! - we didn’t have the confidence to do it consistently, and shots were forced without anyone in rebounding position (only 5 offensive rebounds the whole game!), which led to fast break opportunities for Andover.
The girls need to trust our offenses and trust that the movement they create will, in turn, create good scoring opportunities - we broke down too quickly and felt we had to force things unnecessarily, and that clearly did not generate much offense (14 second half turnovers). We can never expect to win when we can only put up 29 points. Though our defense kept us in the game - 4 point differential with 3 minutes remaining - it ultimately could not withstand unsuccessful offensive possessions, and it was disheartening to see the girls give in to defeat in the final minutes of play (Jamie Samociuk was the one exception as she, the shortest player on both teams, pulled down two offensive rebounds in these final minutes and went 4-5 from the foul line). Final Score: Andover 42 Pomfret 29
Game #2: The girls had the opportunity to take out some of the previous night’s frustration on their next opponent, Miss Porter’s, and the result was a close to 30-point victory. Though it was a slow start for our girls, and to Miss Porter’s credit they gave some nice pressure up top on their 3-2 zone, we were eventually able to attack the holes, draw the defenders and dish to the open player ducking into the space. The score at the half was Pomfret up 29-21, but we found a nice rhythm a few minutes into the second, and the coaches were pleased to finally see the girls drive the paint with confidence. A lot of open looks at the basket followed, and our shooting percentage, as a result, was probably the highest of the season (as was our assists column).
A few highlights of the game were: Meg Gaudreau’s passing (3 assists — though it should have been 6), Jamie’s defensive tenacity (4 steals), Whitney WIllingham’s rebounding, Angie’s outside shooting, Alyson Chase’s and Kevalin Hutachinda’s perfect foul shooting, and Liv Dalton-Hoffman’s composure at the point in the final minutes of play as Miss Porter’s switched up to an aggressive man defense. Final Score: Pomfret 66 Miss Porter’s 37
Hyde
Varsity Basketball
Hyde 9 Marianapolis 59
Hyde started their league play against Marianapolis.  The team was outmatched both offensively and defensively.  In the first half the wolf pack managed to score only two points to Marianapolis’ 34.  The second half proved to be more of the same with Marianapolis beating Hyde down the court for easy lay ups.   Woodstock has many things to work on including their ability to remain poised when things are not going as planned.  The scoring is as follows; Becca Katz ’12, 1-0-2, Mari Barnett ’11, 1-1-3, Andrea Crute ’12, 2-0-4.
Hyde 24 Lincoln  59
Woodstock played last year’s SENE champion Lincoln.  They were formidable last year and they are formidable this year having both size and solid guard play.  Hyde fared better on the score board than the last game with 10 points in the first half and improving on that in the second half. Woodstock’s defensive effort and overall fighting spirit in the game was better, as well.  Their performance was a vast improvement from Friday’s game.  Scoring was as follows; Mari Barnett ’12, 1-0-2, Sam Sallarulo ’13, 3-0-8, including two three pointers, Lara Cornelius ’11, 0-5-5, and Andrea Crute ’12, 2-5-9.
