Pomfret 29 Rivers 52
Jan. 28: After a slow start which saw Rivers take a 14-2 lead, Pomfret finally woke up and fought back, outplaying the opponent in the closing minutes of the half, and heading into the break down only 7 (28-21). Rivers was playing mostly a trapping 1-3-1 three-quarter court zone, and the inability to break it in the opening minutes led to the early deficit. However, once the girls smartened up they were not only able to break it, but able to get numbers up on the attack, and Whitney Willingham proved to be a force in the paint. Whitney struggled to finish her shots from the paint, but this didn’t stop her from trying, and she made four consecutive trips to the foul line. Jamie Samociuk added a very deep three-pointer as did Meg Gaudreau, Z Hutchins finished two jumpers, while Anyolina Montilla and Joddie Iyalekhue each chipped in a basket and a foul shot (Joddie actually went 2-2 from the line but just stepped over it on her second attempt, which was consequently called back). The second half was Pomfret possibly at its least effective. Rivers would go on to outscore Pomfret 24-8 in the second. It seemed as if all the air had been let out of Pomfret’s tires as Rivers ran the floor with numbers up on almost every opportunity. When Pomfret had the chance to defend Rivers in the half-court set they were more often than not able to hold Rivers scoreless, but the girls weren’t disciplined enough as a team to makes this connection and hustle back on D. The frustration the girls felt carried over to the offensive end where no sets were run the majority of the time. Statistically there is no question that this was one of the worst halves of the season: 23 shots taken, 3 scored, 1 offensive rebound, 4 foul shots taken, one scored.
Varsity Hockey
Pomfret 1 Deerfield 1
Jan. 26: While overtime was highlighted by some near goals at both ends of the ice, Pomfret and Deerfield skated to a 1-1 deadlock this evening. Throughout the first the girls looked lethargic, reaching for pucks and allowing the Deerfield players to walk in and get pucks towards the net. Jaimie Leonoff was tested early, turning aside 35 shots on the day. It was only a matter of time before we were penalized for reaching at the Deerfield players instead of using our speed to push them to the boards. With 6 minutes remaining in the first, Deerfield scored off a scrum in front of our net to go up 1-0.
The girls came out in the second with a lot more speed and aggression. The line of Cassie Catlow, Valerie Di Lella and Izzy Regine played well and created a number of quality scoring chances as soon as we stepped back on the ice. After being drastically outshoot in the first, we were evenly matched with Deerfield in the second, third and overtime. Brooke Bytalan, Lilah Fones, Moira MacArthur and Gabby Cricuolo played smart offensively and broke the puck out well in our defensive end. Candace Lu shifted from defense up to forward mid-game today and helped to create chaos and offensive pressure in the Deerfield defensive zone. Jordan Lipson scored the game tying goal with 8 minutes to play in the second period after some tic-tac-toe passing with her line mates Ashley Anctil and Andi Nicholson. After a scoreless third period, we headed to overtime. Pomfret pressured immediately, almost winning the game in the first thirty seconds. Deerfield had two chances of their own where the puck miraculously stayed out of the net. Finally, Pomfret had a 2 v 1 chance in the dying seconds, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Pomfret 3 NMH 1
Jan. 29: Kristy Brown turned away 26 shots to lead the Pomfret Griffins to a 3-1 win. Nine different Pomfret players tallied a point. After a slow start that saw Pomfret down 0-1 after the first period, Pomfret scored three unanswered goals to seal the victory. With just two and a half minutes remaining in the second, Pomfret tied the game off a goal by Valerie Di Lella. Val’s first goal of her Pomfret career was assisted by line mates Cassie Catlow and Candace Lu. Pomfret continued working hard and forced NMH to take a penalty just ten seconds later. Despite a flurry of action in front of the NMH net off point shots from Jordan Lipson and Brooke Bytalan, Pomfret was unable to take the lead. Heading into the third tied 1-1, Pomfret knew that it had to get more pucks to the net and outwork their opponent. The third period was our best 15 minutes of the game. Pomfret registered 15 shots on net and held NMH to just 6. Two minutes into the period, the line of Alex Gerew, Alison Horst and Nataly Maloney got the puck deep into the offensive end. The puck was worked up to the points where Gabby Criscuolo fed a pass to Lilah Fones whose slap shot was deflected by Nataly Maloney to put Pomfret up 2-1. Pomfret continued to pressure and was rewarded with their second goal of the period when Ashley Anctil snuck one by the NMH goaltender with assists going to Jordan Lipson and Moira MacArthur.
