JEWETT CITY --- Nine local fire and ambulance companies will share equally in the $9,000 in grants awarded recently by the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation. The funding will be used in a variety of ways, all designed to  support the delivery of services to local residents and businesses.
The Oneco Fire Company will use its grant to purchase an ice rescue sled with a rope reel, to benefit those living in Sterling and surrounding towns, while the East Killingly Fire District will apply its funding toward a necessary retaining wall and parking lot repairs.
Central Village Fire Company No. 1 will purchase an automated external defibrillator, which will be carried on all response calls. K.B. Ambulance Corps in Danielson will prepare a new ambulance with needed equipment; the Atwood Hose Fire Company in Wauregan will devote its grant to upgrading their self-contained breathing apparatus, which provides clean air to firefighters in adverse conditions.
Voluntown Fire Company No. 1 will use its funding to help purchase a power ambulance stretcher to increase the safety of patients and emergency personnel. The Plainfield Fire Company No. 1 will purchase diving equipment to support the dive team¹s search and rescue operations.
In Brooklyn, the East Brooklyn Fire Department will use its grant for water pumping equipment to assist homeowners and businesses during flood emergencies, and the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company will purchase a portable electric suction unit used to clear a patient¹s airway.
Grants awarded by the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation in the most recent round of funding totaled $26,300, and were distributed to a variety of community initiatives in the bank¹s marketplace. The foundation has provided a total of nearly $50,000 in grant funding for 2010.
