Pomfret School
Varsity Basketball
Pomfret 45 Lincoln 32
Feb. 9: A well-rested squad came out firing against previously undefeated Lincoln School from Providence, With only one practice in six days the girls showed little rust and much energy in the opening minutes of play. Team play was strong as the girls executed the offenses to find good scoring opportunities. Meg Gaudreau had the hot hand at this time, scoring 16 of her 21 points in the first half and proving almost impossible to guard outside the 3-point line. Z Hutchins also connected from outside the line, and Jamie Samociuk added two jumpers while Joddie Iyalekhue finished inside off a nice assist from Gaudreau. Just as it seemed that Pomfret might pull away, Lincoln fought back, running the floor and looking to isolate their big girl inside, closing the gap to 12 heading into the half. The second half was a pretty evenly contested match as Pomfret only outscored Lincoln by 1 point. Lincoln’s post player continued to work the inside, scoring an additional 8 points in the second half (17 total) and a few of Lincoln’s guards found scoring opportunities through the paint against Pomfret’s zone. Fortunately, four new players stepped up to score for Pomfret - Alyson Chase, Whitney Willingham, Anyolina Montilla and Meg Calderado - to keep the opponent at bay. Willingham had an especially strong half, going 3-for-3 on attempted shots inside the paint (with considerable contact) and making two trips to the foul line. Whitney also finished with 3 steals and 2 blocks. Leading rebounder for the game was Montilla with 12, and leading in the assists column were Samociuk with 5 and Hutchins with 4.
Pomfret 50 Williston 28
Feb. 12: The girls hosted Class B opponent Williston Northampton and came away with the victory. It was another strong start for the squad as the girls held all but one of Williston’s players scoreless in the first while amassing 32 points from well-executed offenses. Meg Gaudreau led the way again hitting three 3-pointers in these opening minutes, while Z Hutchins and Whitney Willingham each drained three jumpers and Alyson Chase and Meg Calderao contributed a basket each. Willingham struggled early to score off of 1-v-1 post-ups in the paint, but responded by running the floor and finding her opportunities on the fast break. Whitney has established herself as one of the most difficult forwards to defend in transition offense. Anyolina Montilla also proved a force today on the boards, pulling down seven in the first half (15 total), but unfortunately she wasn’t rewarded much for her efforts as she only made two trips to the foul-line.
In the second half Williston stepped up their offensive efforts while Pomfret let down their defensive intensity a little bit; the result was a 19-18 second half. All twelve players saw action in the second half, and Z Hutchins, Liv Dalton-Hoffman, L’Or-Iman Puymartin, Kevalin Hutachinda and Caroline Kozlowski preserved the win in the closing minutes. Iyalekhue pulled down 4 rebounds before having to come out after a collision in the paint.

Marianapolis 51 Williams 14
Feb. 8: The Golden Knights returned to the Marianapolis Athletic Complex on Tuesday night to host the Williams School. Paced by Melanie Mills (2012) with 13 points, the Golden Knights improved their season record to 13 and 7. Alyson Stolz added 9 points and 3 three pointers.
Hyde
Varsity Basketball
Hyde 34 Wheeler 33
Feb. 9: Hyde managed to get to Wheeler at about the same time the game was supposed to start with a few less uniforms than people which left the team with one substitute.  Even with a harried start the team came out on fire scoring the first 7 points of the game with Bryn Nolan ’12 scoring her first 3 pointer of the season.  Wheeler came firing back  and soon took the lead due to some break downs on Hyde’s man to man coverage.  The  Wolf Pack found itself confused on defense and going into the half at a four-point deficit.  Hyde made an adjustment on defense that proved effective and the girl’s became more aggressive on offense driving to the basket. Hyde scored three baskets in the second half and went to the line 12 times making ten of them. At the end of regulation the score was tie at 29. Near the end of regulation Mari Barnett ’11 fouled out so Hyde was down to no subs.  Katie Smith ’11 came up with a big rebound and bucket. Andrea Crute ’12 also came up big with a rebound and an acrobatic scoop shot that went in. Lara Cornelius ’11 had struggled all day from the floor was fouled and sunk the game winning foul shot to put Hyde ahead.  It was an exciting finish and uplifting ending for a team that has struggled to be unified.  The scoring: Hope Eldridge ’11 1-0-2, Bryn Nolan ’12 1-0-3, Lara Cornelius ’11 0-4-4, Mari Barnett ’11 2-0-4, Katie Smith ’12 4-2-10, and Andrea Crute ’12 2-7-11.
