Robert J. Phagan,

WOODSTOCK — Rev. Robert Jesse Phagan, 60, of Woodstock for the past 30 years, died  Feb. 11, 2011, at home as a result of cancer.
He graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1968, received an associate’s degree in electrical engineering from Thames Valley State Technical College in 1971, a bachelor’s in vocational education from Rhode Island College in 1987, a bachelor's in technology education from Rhode Island College in 1990 and a  Certificate of Theology from Bethel Seminary of the East in 2003.
Jesse was a bi-vocational pastor of North Woodstock Congregational Church since June of 2001, while employed full time as a teacher. He taught at Woodstock Academy for 18 years, and Woonsocket Area Vocational-Technical School for eight years. He worked for the federal government in Alaska for five years as an electronic technician with the National Weather Service and the Federal Aviation Administration. He was also the published author of five textbooks of the topics of applied mathematics and electronics.
Prior to becoming a pastor, he was a member of the Woodstock Evangelical Covenant Church for 20 years where he taught Sunday school for about 15 years, plus adviser for the Bible Club at the Woodstock Academy.
He leaves his wife, Joyce Lorraine Phagan; daughter, Bettina; son, Barrett; granddaughter, Machaila Curio; mother, Theresa Tognini; sister, Kathy Kalendra (Paul); niece Diane Kalendra-Frystak; nephews Eric Kalendra and Mark Kalendra.

Elizabeth Bartkus,

S. WOODSTOCK — Elizabeth M. Bartkus, 86, of Shore Drive, died Feb. 12, 2011, at home.  She was the wife of the late Ernest Bartkus who died in 1986.  Born in 1925 in Simsbury, she was the daughter of the late George and Eva (Yerma) Myketyn.
Mrs. Bartkus worked as a store manager for Simsbury Pharmacy.  She also worked as a machine operator for Underwood Manufacturing during the war.  She was a communicant of St. Mary Church of the Visitation and a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary.  She enjoyed cooking and collecting cookbooks.  An avid basketball fan, she rooted for the Celtics and the men’s and women’s UConn Huskies teams.
She leaves her daughters, Sharon Mulvey and Michele Koss, both of Woodstock;  grandson, Michael Mulvey.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Feb. 17 in St. Mary Church of the Visitation, Putnam.  Burial will take place later in Quassett Cemetery.

Evelyn Cleveland,

DANIELSON — Evelyn H. Cleveland, 92, formerly of Maple Courts, died Feb. 5, 2011, at Regency Heights Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Gordon R. Cleveland who died in 1989.
She was born Oct. 21, 1918, in West Lebanon, N.H., daughter of the late Harry and Louise (Aikens) Griggs. She had made her home in Lebanon, N.H., most of her life. In 1984 Evelyn and her husband retired to South Carolina. In 2000 she moved  to Danielson and made her home at Maple Courts II.
She was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Navy. Evelyn was active with her husband for many years with the Order of The Eastern Star in Lebanon. She enjoyed reading, playing bingo, traveling and was an avid Red Sox fan.
She leaves her daughters, Judith L. Johnson (Wayne) of S. Killingly, Diane Brady (Thomas) of Liberty, S.C.; two grandsons, Thomas Johnson (Diana) of S. Killingly; Jason White of Liberty; three great-grandchildren: Erin White of Liberty, Dylan Johnson and Lucas Johnson, both of S. Killingly. She was predeceased by a sister, Elaine Luddy and two grandsons, Jeffrey Ross and Justin White.

Sylvie Comprone
WOODSTOCK VALLEY — Sylvie Comprone, 51, of Beaver Dam Road, died Feb. 07, 2011, in Day Kimball Hospital.  She was the wife of Dennis Comprone for six years.  Born in 1959 on Magdalen Island, P.Q. Canada, she was the daughter of the late John and Aline (Gauthier) LeBlanc.
Born and raised in Canada, she moved to Connecticut in 2004 fulfilling her dream of becoming a proud resident of the U.S.  Mrs. Comprone worked as a cashier at Price Chopper and enjoyed taking care of animals especially her cat Tommy.
In addition to her husband Dennis, she leaves her stepson, Bryce Comprone of Louisville, Ky.; a stepdaughter and best friend Carly Comprone and her friend Tim Ferris of Putnam; her four brothers, Jacques LeBlanc, Roland LeBlanc, Mar? Andre LeBlanc and Reynald LeBlanc all of Montreal, Canada; two sisters, Lise Lesperance (Roland) and Jocelyne LaCombe (Marcel), all of Montreal, Canada; brother-in-law, Joseph Comprone (Connie) of Old Lyme; sister-in-laws, Jackie Comprone-Weber (Steven) of Hampden, Mass., and Annmarie Bellenoit (Paul) of Old Lyme.  Sylvie was the sister of the late Franc LeBlanc.

Florence A. Morin,

VERNON — Florence (Arsenault) Morin, 88, of Mill Stream Drive, formerly of N. Grosvenordale, died Feb. 11, 2011 in Westview Healthcare Center.  Born in 1922 in Fall River, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Leona (Blanchette) Arsenault.
Mrs. Morin was raised in N. Grosvenordale and worked for Matson Mills, Dazzle Carwash, and as a retail associate for Louis Dress Shop.  She enjoyed sharp-looking cars but most of all, she loved spending time with her family and socializing. 
She leaves grandchildren, Todd Morin (Diane) of Woodstock, Chad Morin (Donna) of S. Killingly; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Angela, Erica, Ashley, Hollis, Amanda, and Ben; her great-great grandchildren, Chase, Adalise, Georgiana, and Isabelle; her daughter-in–law, Elaine Morin of E. Winsor and her good friend, Sandra Chubbuck of S. Killingly.  She was the mother of the late Wayne G. Morin and Joan Purdy.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 9 to 10 a.m. Feb. 19, 2011 in the Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main St., N. Grosvenordale. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, N. Grosvenordale, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date. 

Emily S. Lafleur,

PUTNAM — Emily (Mikat) Lafleur, 75, of Sunnyside Avenue, died Feb. 6, 2011, in UMass University Campus.  She was the wife of the late Richard L. Lafleur.  Born in 1936 in Putnam, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Annie (Stefanik) Mikat.
In her youth, Mrs. Lafleur worked in Mikat’s Market of Putnam, the family grocery store.  She continued her work as a bookkeeper for A&P and Stop & Shop for 45 years.  She was a communicant of St. Mary Church of the Visitation in Putnam. 
She leaves four sons and two daughters, Susette Cote (Roger) of Concord, N.H., Laurent Lafleur (Katherine) of Clarksville, Md., Phillip Lafleur (Nicole) of E. Killingly, Leonard Lafleur (Leigh) of Putnam, Dennis Lafleur of Putnam, and Denise Wesolowski (Timothy) of N. Grosvenordale; her sister, Anna Peckham of Putnam; 15 grandchildren. She was the sister of the late John Mikat and Evelyn Lukowski.

Bernadette Laplante,

DANIELSON — Bernadette C. Laplante, 91 of Maple Courts, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Feb. 7, 2011, at Matulaitis Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Leo G. Laplante, he died in 1995.
She was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Pawtucket, R.I., daughter of the late George and Desneiges Berard. She had made her home at Matulaitis Nursing Home in Putnam for the last 11 years moving from Maple Courts in Danielson. In 1995 she moved  with her husband to Danielson from New Bedford, Mass. She loved to play games and was a fun loving person.
She leaves her children: Donald Laplante (Charlotte) of Providence, Joan Lambert (John) of  Danielson; grandchildren: Dawn Dawson (Brad) of Charlestown, R.I., Lucinda Lambert Hutchinson (Ken) or Worcester, Chris Lambert (Denise) of N. Attleboro, Mass., and five great-grandchildren.

Jeanette M. Olson,

PUTNAM — Jeanette M. Olson, 84, of Modock Road, died Feb. 12, 2011, in Day Kimball Hospital.  She was the wife of George “Paul” Olson for 61 years. Born in 1926 in Thompson, she was the daughter of the late Carmine and Mary (Molinaro) Muraco.
Mrs. Olson worked as a secretary for American Standard Co.  She was a communicant of St. Mary Church of the Visitation.  She was an avid cook.  She enjoyed making fudge and received great pleasure giving it away to others. 
In addition to her husband Paul, she leaves her sister, Teresa Muraco of Grosvenordale;  nieces and nephews.  She was the sister of the late Anthony Muraco, Samuel Muraco, Frank Muraco, Palma Muraco, Vincentina Muraco and Rose Muraco.

Dorothy Peck,

ABINGTON — Dorothy M. Peck, of Hampton Road, died Feb. 2, 2011, at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. She was the wife of Merritt E. “Budd” Peck. They were married in 2004.
She was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Cheshire, daughter of Milton and Rose (Mitchell) Cooke.
Dorothy retired in 1994 after 20 years, from Middlesex Assurance Company in Middletown; she was a assistant vice president of Commercial Lines.
She was a member of the Abington Congregational Church. In 1978 she opened the “Cheese And,” a gourmet store in Middletown. She was a licensed Realtor.
She leaves in addition to her husband Budd, her children: Donna D’Amico-Buonocore (Michael) of Wolcott; Cynthia D’Amico-Casanova of Abington, Thomas D’Amico (Teresa) of Wolcott; John D’Amico of Abington; siblings Rosemary Shelton of Nashville, Helen Cooke of Waterbury, Milton Cooke of Cheshire; grandchildren Jason, Jennifer, Nicholas, Justin, Allyssa, Tommy, Jeyson, and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister Edna Lauber.
A Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 19 at Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam.   Donations: American Lung Association, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT, 06108-3272.

James P. Wolf
WOODSTOCK — James Paul Wolf, special needs son of Paul and Katherine Wolf of Woodstock, died Jan. 30, 2011, at his group home.
He leaves his brothers David (Martha), and Karl (Ellen); six nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jamie’s Life was Feb. 12 at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock.

Bernard V. Chartier,

DAYVILLE — Bernard V. Chartier, 90, of Dayville, died Feb. 4, 2011, at home.
He was born March 6, 1920, in Brooklyn, son of the late Victorien and Adelaide (Bernier) Chartier.
He was the husband of the late Irene (Touchette) Chartier. They were married on May 5, 1947. She died Nov. 2, 2009.
Mr. Chartier served in the Merchant Marines during WWII.
He was a tool and die maker and worked at American Optical in Putnam for many years.
He was a communicant of both St. Ignatius Church in Rogers and St. Joseph Church in Dayville. He and his wife traveled extensively throughout the U.S.
He leaves his children, Madalene N. Carilli (Michael) of Norwich, Bernard M. Chartier of Battleground, Wwash., Lawrence A. Chartier (Dr. Carleen Chartier) of Evergreen, Colo., and Timothy J. Chartier (Marsha) of Nottingham, N.H.; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 10 at St. Joseph Church, Dayville, with burial in the spring in South Cemetery, Pomfret. Tillinghast Funeral Home, Danielson.

David C. King,

DANIELSON — David C. King, 41, of Mechanic Street, died Feb. 5, 2011, at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam after a long battle with a major illness.
 He was born March 30, 1969, in Putnam, son of Charles and Sandra (Snelgrove) King.
He was the husband of Belinda (Bourque) King; they were married Oct. 7, 1989.
David was a skilled tile and carpet installer.
He was a member of The Danielson Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
He enjoyed participating in the worldwide volunteer Bible preaching work. He enjoyed his 1969 Mustang and skiing.
Besides his wife Belinda, he leaves two daughters, Rachel King and Rebekah King, both of Danielson; three brothers, Mark King (Peggy), Jeff King (Joleen) Michael King and girlfriend Tiffany Salen; and extended family.
A Memorial Service was Feb. 12 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses with private burial.
