POMFRET --- Not only is year-long Pomfret's 300th anniversary kicking off Sept. 22, it will be one sweet debut - complete with its own ice cream flavor.
Maureen Nicholson of the Pomfret 300 Committee said the committee has worked for four years to come up with a celebration of Pomfret's 300th year. One of the more unusual honors will be Patriotic Pomfret, an ice cream flavor created just for the occasion. We-Li-Kit Ice Cream, just a short jaunt down Rt. 97 from the official kickoff location, the Pomfret Recreation area, worked with the committee to make Patriotic Pomfret ice cream a reality.
Becky Rich, manager of We-Li-Kit, said the committee approached We-Li-Kit last fall initially and then the discussions warmed up this past spring. Committee members had brainstormed a few ideas on the ice cream flavor. Nicholson said Patriotic Pomfret and its red, white and blue theme is in line with the whole theme of the anniversary year.
Rich said the ice cream is red, white and blue: vanilla ice cream with maraschino cherries and blueberry swirl.
Rich said initially the committee asked about using real fruit. "We've tried that before," Rich said. "Real fruit freezes up and turns into little bb's."
Finally the vanilla, maraschino cherry and blueberry swirl rose to the top. "Yes, we can do that," Rich told committee members.
The name "Patriotic Pomfret" was the brainchild of John Carter, committee member, Nicholson said.
We-Li-Kit has been around for about 22 years, according to Rich. Nicholson said the business has always been very supportive of Pomfret. "We-Li-Kit has been so supportive all Pomfret events and supplies their ice cream at Memorial Day every year," Nicholson said.
Committee members, besides Nicholson and Carter, include: Nancy Weiss, Walter and Ann Hinchman, Tim Gillane, Bev Champany and Laurie Bell . Mary Patenaude was also a member.
