20th QVCC
golf tourney

Despite the heavy rains and gusty winds that pelted the northeastern Connecticut area Sept. 18 and early Sept. 19, Quinnatisset Country Club was in excellent shape for the 20th Anniversary Quinebaug Valley Community College Golf Tournament, which ran Sept. 19. A full field of 36 foursomes was on hand for the event sponsored by Cargill Chevrolet, The Citizens National Bank, Gerardi Insurance Services and the Newell D. Hale Foundation.
With little regard for any of the other foursomes, the group of Tom Harney, Rene Morin, Bill Poirier and Tom Morway ran away from the field faster than any greyhound ever did at the former Plainfield Greyhound Park. Led by the long drives of Poirier, the chipping of Morway, the putting of Moring and the cheerleading of Captain Harney, the team posted a blistering 56 over the par 72 Quinny layout despite strong headwinds that slowed golfers all day.
In the women’s competition the results were much the same, as the perennial powerhouse foursome of Denise St. Onge, Donna Lefevre, Laura Smutnik and Anne Kelly smoked the course with a score of seven under par 65. Their score in fact was better than most of the groups composed of all males.
“Everyone seemed to have fun today even though the race for the top was slightly less competitive than usual,” said tournament chairman Mary Jane Burke.
The wind didn’t seem to faze Kevin Cole and Anne Kelly as they won the long drive contests with drives that far outdistanced any would be challengers. Closest to the pin contests were won by David Coderre (7th hole), Macy Harney (3rd), Mike Martin (15th) and Bob Tetreault (13th).
According to Monique Wolanin, the college’s director of Development, the tournament broke all records financially, topping $60,000. The proceeds will go toward providing scholarship assistance to local students.
“Our heartfelt thanks go out to all the sponsors, golfers, volunteers and in-kind donors for assuring the success of our 20th anniversary golf outing. Their support means so much to the college but more so to those students who attend the school and receive much needed financial aid,” said Wolanin.
Members of the 2012 Golf Tournament Committee were Mary Jane Burke, Chairperson, Jeff Bousquet, Judy Haines, Tom Harney, George Lakatzis, Rene Morin, Christian Sarantopolous and Monique Wolanin.
