Woodstock and Bath, Maine --- The Hyde Leadership Society, created two years ago by a group of faculty and students, is providing a number of great opportunities this year for students looking to develop their leadership skills both inside and outside of campus.
The concept behind the society is to inspire and support student leaders to become more effective contributors in the community by aiding them in being exemplary role models for their peers and in teaching them how to work collaboratively with the faculty.
“We created the Leadership Society in order to honor our students who are striving for excellence in all areas of their lives,” says Don MacMillan, head of school on the Bath campus. “It aligns well with the Hyde mission and philosophy and it will serve as an important leadership development and character-building opportunity.”
Thus far this year, students on both campuses have been challenged to take more significant roles in their communities, ranging from dean’s area to admissions to school meetings to running a blood drive. Outside of campus, Woodstock students volunteered at the Thompson Public Library and have attended a senatorial debate at the University of Connecticut. Bath students have had the opportunity to attend leadership seminars, classes that hone their reading skills, and participate in a wilderness retreat.
As the school year continues, other HLS activities include week-long internships in the winter, the Bulldog challenge at Bryant Univeristy, and visits with different alumni parents and business leaders. In order to join the Hyde Leadership Society, students have to obtain the recommendation and support of a faculty member and parent as well as successfully complete an interview.
