Keeping
mail
carriers
safe this
winter
Local post office officials are asking residents to keep the letter carriers safe from injury during the winter season by keeping the mail areas clear of ice and snow.
Donald Deslauriers, Putnam Post Office postmaster, said "On behalf of the men and women of the U.S. Postal Service who deliver the mail in this community, I would like to ask customers to help us keep our letter carriers safe from  injury during the winter season."
He said many letter carriers have been injured slipping on ice and snow.
Customers are asked to clear enough snow from curbside boxes to allow mail trucks to approach the box.
Then deliver the mail without leaving their vehicle and to drive away from the box without danger or the need for backing.
He added walkways should be cleared of snow and ice and allow enough traction to avoid slips, trips or falls.
"Stairs should also be kept in good repair so as not to cause injury to the letter carriers or others who visit the customer's home," he said.
Deslauriers said, "We ask that our customers work in partnership with us so that we can provide the best service possible.
"Together we can beat the winter blues and provide safe, efficient mail delivery and the kind of mail service that our customers deserve."
