Two PSA soccer players commit to top NAIA programs
PUTNAM — According to soccer head coach Christopher Steele, Putnam Science Academy continues to make strides in player development, as two of its soccer standouts recently committed to play at top-tier NAIA programs.
Darren Kuyeri, a versatile and hardworking player from Blantyre, Malawi, has committed to Carolina University in Winston-Salem, N.C., while Tanaka Makechemu, known for his relentless work ethic and hailing from Harare, Zimbabwe, will be continuing his career at Harris-Stowe State University.
Both commitments mark significant achievements for PSA’s soccer program, as Steele highlighted the importance of these milestones. “The commitment to getting players into top programs is based on having a hard season schedule,” Steele said.
“We played so many top teams in New England and a few top teams from New Jersey. Having the ability to play against players who are going to NCAA Division I or teams with players on their countries’ national teams is very helpful. A tough schedule prepares them for this level.”
Carolina University, ranked as a top NAIA program, reached the national championship game this season as the No. 1 seed in tournament play. Steele described Kuyeri as a smart and versatile player.
“He can play so many positions and will just play anywhere. He works very hard at his craft,” Steele said.
Makechemu’s commitment to Harris-Stowe, another highly regarded NAIA school, comes as no surprise to those who know his dedication. “His work ethic is huge,” Steele said. “He is always working after practice, whether on the field or in the gym. Coaches at top schools love his attitude and attention to detail. He is a very talented player, and I’m happy for him.”
Steele also emphasized the significance of these commitments for the players and the program as a whole. “I think it was great for me and the program to get them committed to top schools at the NAIA level,” he said.
“International players who play at the NAIA level have great success. I hope their achievements will show the others that there are so many options out there. Most players only know NCAA Division I coming from overseas, but Division II, III, and NAIA are all great options.”
Steele’s focus this year has been to help players find the right fit academically and athletically, particularly at four-year schools. “My overall thoughts starting this year were to focus on more four-year schools over JUCO. I love the JUCO system and have placed a bunch of players in it, but I wanted the team to find the right fit,” he explained.
As Kuyeri and Makechemu prepare for the next chapter in their soccer careers, their commitments reflect the hard work and dedication they’ve put in at PSA, while also serving as inspiration for their teammates to explore a variety of opportunities to continue playing at the next level.
