Centaurs
sweep
tourney
The Woodstock Academy Centaurs Gold prep basketball team finished up the first half of its season and went into the holiday break on a good note with a 60-42 win over Thetford Prep Dec. 22.
It completed a three-game run for the Centaurs through the Basketbull tournament which also saw the Centaurs down Mt. Zion Prep, 84-76, Dec. 21 and the International Sports Academy, 89-64, Dec. 19.
The three victories raised the Gold team’s mark to 13-1 on the season and extended its win streak to seven games going into the break.
The Centaurs broke out to a 14-point lead, 29-15, in the first half against Thetford Prep and then maintained that advantage throughout the second half.
Woodstock Academy coach Jacque Rivera used his bench liberally in the game with Josh Davis being the only player to see the court for more than half the game.
Davis played almost 24 minutes, Quinton McElroy played just under 20 minutes.
As a result, there was only one player in double digits as Cairo McCrory delivered 13 points in 13 minutes.
McCrory was 2-of-3 from beyond the 3-point arc and was also 5-of-7 from the free throw line.
Lawrence Foreman and Michael Jefferson each scored seven points with Foreman adding a team-best five rebounds.
The Centaurs had it a little tougher in their second meeting this season with Mt. Zion Prep.
The Centaurs had also downed Mt. Zion in the National Prep Invitational tournament on Nov. 24.
Ronnie DeGray had a big day for the Centaurs as he made 7-of-10 from the floor including three 3-pointers and was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 23 points.
Dyondre Dominguez got hot in the second half and finished with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and McCrory had another good game, playing all but two minutes, and finished with 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting with two more 3-pointers.
Despite the scoring, the Centaurs couldn’t shake Mt. Zion which trailed by only six at the half, 40-34, and the two teams played even in the second half.
Woodstock Academy opened the Basketbull tournament with a morning game Dec. 19 and the Centaurs shook off the cobwebs quickly for the 25-point victory.
DeGray opened the tournament with a sparkling performance, making 9-of-13 from the floor and finishing with 22 points. He also led the Centaurs with eight rebounds.
McElroy was the only other player in double figures with 10 points.
The Gold team returns to action Jan. 8 with a game at home against the Hoosac School.
Blue split last 2 before break
The Centaurs played their final game before the Christmas break Dec. 20 and posted a 71-50 win over Hamden Hall School.
The Centaurs went into the break with an 11-5 record.
“I was really proud of the energy,” said Blue coach Denzel Washington. “It was great to get the bounce back win before the break.”
Vondre Chase led the Centaurs with 18 points and contributed three rebounds.
Darryl MacKey (6 rebounds) and Michael Eurquhart (5 caroms) both added 11 points.
The Centaurs needed the win after they struggled the night before.
It’s always a tough time of year for basketball teams especially prep basketball squads.
With the holiday break within reach, and most thinking about heading home for Christmas, it’s tough to keep the focus on the floor and the Centaurs ran into that issue.
As a result, the Blue team fell to Lee Academy, 61-30, at the Basketbull tournament at the South End Community Center.
The Centaurs shot under 20 percent from the floor, making just 10 of 51 shots and were 0-for-20 from beyond the 3-point line.
Chase led the Centaurs with 10 points while Eurquhart and Paul Hosey getting five points each.
Eshete Calvo led Woodstock Academy with six rebounds.
The Blue also return to action at 5 p.m. Jan. 8 with a game at home against Hoosac School.

Volunteers sought
DANIELSON — Communities of Putnam, Killingly, Brooklyn, Woodstock, Pomfret, Plainfield, Sterling, and Thompson are boosting their capacity to keep the area’s homeless population safe this winter with the Northeast No Freeze Project. New winter shelter capacity next to the Access Emergency Shelter in Danielson is currently being renovated after an outpouring of support from the community.
St. Albans Church’s Rectory, 254 Broad St., will open as soon as renovations are done to accommodate up to 30 individual men and women per night as needed through March 31. Families with children will be sent to the Access Emergency Shelter on Reynolds Street.
Access operates one of only two year-round Family Emergency Shelters in northeastern Connecticut, with 40 beds to shelter individuals and families. Over the past three years, the Access Shelter which is located in Danielson has also allowed as many as 15 additional people who are not residents of the Shelter to stay overnight in the first floor community room. A group of local nonprofits in collaboration with local town government, faith communities and concerned residents came together and formed the Northeast No Freeze Project to create a space to shelter people experiencing homelessness during the winter in northeast Connecticut.
Ashley Vienneau is the new Volunteer Coordinator for the project and is taking applications for volunteers. The Northeast No Freeze Project will need as many as 30 individuals willing to volunteer for one night per month or 15 volunteers for 2 nights per month. Please contact Vienneau at 860-207-4279 or
Guests are allowed to enter the Shelter each night between 8 and 10 p.m. if sufficient staff coverage is available. No guests will be admitted to the Shelter after 10. Guests will be asked to present an ID but will NOT be denied shelter for lack of ID. Guests with felony convictions will be allowed in the Shelter. The Shelter closes each day at 8 a.m., at which time all guests must leave the property, unless they have an appointment scheduled with an Access staff member helping guests find housing. Each guest is allowed to bring into the Shelter one bag or backpack of personal belongings. No food is allowed in the shelter, the Northeast No Freeze is simply a warm place for the night.

PSA girls
take wins ---
shorthanded
This wasn’t the challenge she was looking for.
Putnam Science Academy girls’ prep basketball coach Amanda Morales had her team scheduled for three games in three days (which actually made it six games in nine days) before it could break for the holidays.
What she didn’t know was that three players were going to be unavailable for the Rivers Holiday Tournament (a fourth was excused to miss the games, and a fifth was out with a concussion), which forced her to go with just seven players in those three games.
Things didn’t get off to a good start on Dec. 19 when three of the seven Mustangs fouled out of the first game in a 42-36 loss to Bradford Christian Academy. Lani Cornfield and Sabou Gueye had 10 points apiece for PSA, which handled BCA easily just 12 days earlier in a 15-point win. This was a different story though, as the Mustangs had to finish the game with just four players on the court.
The team bounced back impressively the next two afternoons however, dropping The Rivers School 53-49 and then Tabor Academy, 49-42.
“It was a total team effort,” Morales said of the first win. She was right. Delaney Haines had 20 points, four rebounds, and three steals; Shawni Cornfield had 11 points and four assists; Gueye finished with 14 points. But there was more.
“Sabou and Shawni had total control of the boards, really showcasing their athleticism,” Morales said. “Lani (Cornfield) has complete command of the offense. Her decision-making was near perfect. Delaney hit a couple of huge 3s and sank two big free throws as well. Sabou was sensational. Lucie (Castagne) did a phenomenal job of shutting down their best scorer. It was a great team win.”
The win over Tabor was propelled by Gueye’s phenomenal all-around game. She finished with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists, four steals, and four blocked shots. Haines hit five 3-pointers and added 19 points for the Mustangs, who went into their well-earned break with a 10-4 record.
“I am so proud of these girls,” Morales said.
Boys’ Basketball
PSA’s boys’ prep and Varsity 2 teams also played before break, but neither faced anything like the obstacles the girls did. In fact, the prep team played one of its most efficient games of the season on Dec. 16 in a 127-97 win over Master’s, a game that was even more lopsided than the score shows. And that was its third game in three days as well, after playing twice in New York City that weekend.
The Mustangs (14-1) absolutely shot the lights out in that one, making 34-of-48 (70.8 percent) of their 2-point field goal attempts, 15-of-36 (41.6 percent) of their 3-pointers, and 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) of their free throws.
“I was a little nervous but they had a lot of energy, a lot of confidence, everybody shot the ball really well,” said PSA coach Tom Espinosa. “We’re deep, we’re athletic, and we can wear teams down.”
D’Maurian Williams had 21 points to lead PSA. He made 7-of-10 shots, including 5-of-7 on 3s.
“The rim definitely feels bigger,” Williams said, “and it definitely feels like I can shoot any shot on the court. My teammates did a good job of finding me open and giving me the opportunity.”
Said Espinosa: “D’Maurian is very confident when he has the ball in his hands. He doesn’t think anyone can stop him, and a lot of times people can’t. Today was one of those days…you play up on him and he’ll go by you, you lay off of him and he can really shoot the ball.”
Marty Silvera finished with 17 points, Terrell Ard Jr. added 12 points and eight rebounds, JuJu Murray 12 points and six assists, Vlad Goldin 11 points and eight rebounds, Julian Dozier 10 points and six assists, and Josh Gray 10 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks for the Mustangs (14-1), who led 70-37 at the half.
“We definitely bounced back from that loss,” Williams said. “That loss was just off effort, not off anything else. We decided we were going to fix that and not let teams compete with us.
“The only way we can lose is effort because we have all the talent in the world.”
The only other game on the schedule last week was the Mustangs’ Varsity 2 team, which got 16 points off the bench, all in the second half, from Harrison Bauer in an 82-55 win over Hillside. Kevin Ravix and Erwan Menguy both had 12 points, and Nick Renshaw finished with 11, also off the bench, for the Mustangs (4-2).
