A sporty hello goes out from RPC to Teddy Babcock the man behind the desk in the pro shop at Connecticut National Golf Club.  The congenial Babcock is a great ambassador for the course, as well as being a pretty decent striker of the little white ball.
There hasn’t been a great deal of news coming from the Regional Community YMCA lately but it appears the group is attempting to make an impact on the community by getting involved in the Friends & Family Fun Walk from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 14 at Rotary Park.
Information sent out recently indicates a full day of events is planned with a variety of activities on tap for all ages.  The day will begin with a “Bring Your Own Lunch” community picnic, children’s exercises, music and success stories.  A 1-mile walk along the River Trail to the Farmers Market Pavilion is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.  Exercise stations guided by Body by Design, Amy Williams and Laughter Yoga will greet walkers along the route.
Simultaneously at 1:45 p.m. at the Pavilion walkers will be treated to family games, education stations, artistic displays and healthy food samples.  Walkers are scheduled to return to Rotary Park around 3:15 p.m. where there will be fun walk door prizes and community cheer.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs and wear appropriate walking shoes or sneakers.
The walk, which is stepping out in a big way for the Last Green Valley’s Walktober event will be led by the Follow the Fifty models of heart health.  The effort is a partnership of the Town of Putnam with the Northeast District Department of Health, Healthquest Northeast Connecticut, Day Kimball Healthcare and The Y.
In the event of rain, activities will be moved to the Putnam Middle School and details will be announced on WINY Radio 1350.
Putnam Golfer in Jr. Club
Championship…
At the end of August a Putnam junior golfer tied for first place at the Jr. Club Championship, which took place on the North Course at Lake of Isles at Foxwood.  Spencer Salvas, the son of Warren and Lisa Salvas, fired a 74 to tie for first place in the 18-hole stroke play event.  The 16-year-old Putnam High School junior competed against a field of golfers from throughout New England and parts of New York.
Salvas, a member of Quinnatisset Country Club, is a familiar figure around Lake of Isles as he is a student of golf instructor Derek Hooper.  Serious about his golf, Salvas also participates in the Lake of Isles winter program, which consists of golf swing technique, and hitting golf balls from a heated area at the outside driving range.  A member of coach Jim Bartolomei’s Putnam Clippers, Salvas can be found in tournaments throughout the summer.  Most recently he’s competed in the Norwich Invitational and the Quinnatisset Club Championship.  His goal is to play beyond high school on the collegiate level.
Former Centaur Kicker Making
 Name at UConn…
Andrea Plucenik who never got to play a full four years of soccer at Woodstock Academy due to two debilitating leg injuries is making up for lost time on the pitch at UConn. Ticketed for stardom as a high school soccer player, Plucenik saw her career in Woodstock side tracked by ACL injuries.  Despite the injuries, the UConn women’s soccer coaching staff saw the potential and took the risk of bringing Plucenik to Storrs.  The gamble appears to have paid off for the Huskies.
Last week Plucenik was named the Big East Rookie of the Week for her play against St. John’s University of New York.  Plucenik of Brooklyn scored three goals in a 5-1 UConn victory over the Johnnies.  A forward for the 5-3 overall and 1-1-0 Big East Huskies, Plucenik is second on the team in scoring with nine points, coming on four goals and one assist.
Marianapolis Grad Playing College Soccer…
In a very unique situation a 2012 Marianapolis Prep School graduate is a member of a college soccer team.  Marissa Iamartino is a student at Mass College of Art and Design in Boston, where she is studying photography and art & fashion.  Through an arrangement with NCAA Division III Emerson College, she’s eligible to play for Emerson.  According to word from Boston, Iamartino is seeing her fair share of playing time as a freshman.
Iamartino, the daughter of Joe and Val Iamartino of Thompson, was a three-sport athlete in prep school.  She played soccer and basketball and ran track for the Lady Knights.  An accomplished photographer, she won a gold national award and a Parsons School of Design Award as a student at Marianapolis.
Calling All Future
Referees…
Roger LaFrancois, who recently completed a successful season with the St. Louis Cardinals Class A short season team in Batavia as the team’s hitting coach, is hard at work on behalf of the IAABO – Eastern Connecticut Board 8 basketball officials.
According to LaFrancois, the Board is issuing a call for anyone interested in refereeing basketball this winter.  The officials work games on the high school, junior high school, industrial and youth levels, giving the new referees an opportunity to learn the trade very quickly.
In order to prepare prospective referees for the upcoming season, clinics are scheduled for Killingly High School on the following dates: September 24 & 26 and October 3, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, and 29.  Anyone interested in attending or looking for more information should contact Bob Bernier at 860 465-7771 or by e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. Additional clinics will also be conducted at Norwich Free Academy on September 25, October 2, 9, 16, 23, 25, 30 and November 1.  Contact Mike Thomas, This email address is being protected from spambots.
