DANIELSON — The Last Green Valley, Inc. (TLGV) has announced the winners of the 2013 TLGV Calendar Photo Contest, images that celebrate life and capture the unique spirit of the region.  Every year the organization produces an informative calendar with great pictures, holidays, moon phases, and interesting tidbits about the history, flora and fauna of the National Heritage Corridor.   This year’s contest drew 108 entries.  Twelve monthly photographs and one cover shot were selected in a blind competition.
“We were amazed at the number of photos that were submitted for the contest,” said Charlene Cutler, TLGV executive director.  “They were all beautiful, poignant and remarkable.  It was very difficult to decide on just 13 for the calendar.”
The 2013 Beautiful Year in The Last Green Valley will include the work of Eleanor Linkkila from Hampton.  Two of her shots, “Winter Wonderland” and “Bucolic Farm” will illustrate the months of January and December.  Interestingly, these wonderful snow scenes were both shot in the bizarre October snowstorm last year.  The other winter photo will grace the page for February and was submitted by Paula Apro of Ashford, titled “Winter Shack.”
The green of Spring is heralded by “Skunk Cabbage,” photographed by Ulla Roemer from Pomfret and will be featured in March.  A very unusual shot of a duckling and fish, “New Friends” taken in Eastford by Susan LaSante, illustrates April.  “Misty Morning along the Natchaug River” epitomizes an early May dawn and was submitted by Rusty Lanzit of Chaplin.
Halina Glowaka of Killingly took an exceptional close-up shot of a bumble bee on a flower in her garden, “Bee on Flower,” which will identify the June page.  The July illustration is “The Wonder of it all,” taken by Maureen Nicholson of Pomfret and capturing the moment a young girl contemplates the vastness of the natural world before her.  Sandee Harraden of Woodstock submitted an exquisite photograph of a “Hummingbird at Red Impatiens” that will inspire viewers for August.
September features a beautiful shot of “Swift Farm Honey” taken in Mansfield by Susan Muldoon of Enfield.  Fall foliage in an apple orchard is the subject of the October photo, “Fall Foliage in The Last Green Valley” by T. Loring White of Eastford.  Representing the history of the region, “Momento Mori” by Desiree Brooker from Killingly, illustrates November with an iconic carved gravestone from the 18th century.
The coveted cover shot was submitted by Ross Tomlin of Hampton.  Titled “Fern and Log in Woods,” the photograph captures the intense beauty of a forest scene, rich in tones of brown and green.  “It is so exceptional that the viewer can almost smell the forest and hear the crunch of dead leaves underfoot,” said Cutler.
The 2013 Beautiful Year in The Last Green Valley is on sale now through the TLGV Online Shop, www.thelastgreenvalley.org for $12.50.  All proceeds from the shop support the work of The Last Green Valley, Inc.
