Fife and Drum
The Abel Joslen Irregulars Fife and Drum Corps of Thompson celebrated its first anniversary by appearing in its first fife and drum muster on July 24 in Colchester.  The Abel Joslen Irregulars is a family-based fife and drum corps established to rekindle history and music in our youth.  The name is derived from a local colonial fifer.  Abel Joslen, of Thompson, was born on the eve of the American Revolution.  Too young to serve, he watched his three older brothers march off to fight the British.  Abel enjoyed music and, as a teenager, wrote simple, melodious fife music with detailed sketches of instruments in his Commonplace Book.  This book from 1790 is in the archives of the Old Sturbridge Village Museum.  The Irregulars practice from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Rotary Park in Putnam.
