football hits
4-win mark
It was done out of necessity, but it may have given the Woodstock Academy football team some more options for the rest of the season.
The Centaurs put together 339 yards on the ground and doubled up on host Montville, 56-28, Oct. 8.
The Centaurs will also get a little break this weekend as they have a bye week before playing at Bacon Academy on Oct. 23.
Woodstock went into the game with Montville (0-4) a little worse for the wear. The receiving corps was banged up in the battle with Waterford the week before. It meant the coaching staff had to look at other options.
“We had to come up with something where if one person goes down, we’re not left with nothing. We got a few guys who can run the ball so we decided to make that the emphasis,” said coach Sean Saucier.
The Centaurs ran the ball 25 times against Montville, averaging 13.6 yards per carry.
The Centaurs scored on their first possession, taking 13 plays to score in a more conventional way for them, a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Davis to Jackson Goetz.
But Davis didn’t throw all that much all night, completing just 6-of-10 passes for 60 yards.
The Centaurs went up, 14-0, early in the second quarter on a 4-yard run by senior fullback Tyler Green. It was the first of three touchdowns for Green (10 carries, 78 yards) on the night.
But Montville hung in and made it a one touchdown game five minutes before the half when quarterback Chas Terni snuck in from 4 yards out.
Saucier said Montville was physical and had some good players despite not having put together a win yet this season. “We had to get (his players) attention at halftime, went over a few things and made some adjustments,” Saucier said.
Whatever was said, the team should bottle and save. The Centaurs came out in the second half and scored three touchdowns in the first 5:33 of the second half.
Davis started the half with a 57-yard run on the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff. One play later, Green went in untouched from a yard out.
The Centaurs forced Montville to punt and Davis (7 carries, 172 yards) worked some more magic, going 73 yards down the left sideline to put the Centaurs up, 28-7.
Goetz returned another Montville punt to the 20-yard line of the hosts and on the next play, junior running back Trevor Savoie (6 carries, 89 yards) enjoyed a touchless 20-yard jaunt to the end zone. Goetz would catch his sixth touchdown pass of the season just seven seconds in to the final quarter from 20 yards away. Green added an 8-yard run for a score and Centaurs junior Austin Amlaw put the exclamation point on the victory with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 38 seconds to play.
Crucial Victory
It was a victory the Woodstock boys’ soccer team desperately needed. The Centaurs climbed back within a win of .500 with a 2-1 overtime victory over Bacon Academy.
It raised Woodstock’s record to 4-5-1 overall and 2-2 in Div. II of the ECC. The Bobcats (6-4, 2-2) were winning all of the 50-50 balls in the first half.
Keeper Brian Jameson made two nice saves for Woodstock in the first 15 minutes before rolling his ankle and yielding to Zach Roethlein.
After halftime Bacon went up. Woodstock stepped up. In the final minute of regulation, Lukas Krupp found himself in a crowd in front of the Bacon net and converted to tie the match and send it into overtime. Three minutes later, Max Ferreira scored on a diving header off a cross from Collin Manuilow to give the Centaurs a sweet victory.
The Centaurs played under the lights earlier in the week for a second straight match and engaged in a defensive struggle with E. Lyme (4-5-1) with neither able to find the back of the net. The match ended in a 0-0 double overtime, scoreless tie.
The Vikings did have a couple of good looks early in the contest, but failed to cash in.
Otherwise, the goalies were relatively unchallenged. Jameson made two saves for the Centaurs while E. Lyme keeper Connor Piper made four.
Centaurs Volleyball
Youthful and undermanned. The Woodstock volleyball team continues to battle illness and injury. It has made for a difficult season record-wise.
The Centaurs fell to 2-9 this past week after 3-1 losses to Griswold and E. Lyme and a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Conard.
Bottone, just back from illness himself, saw some positives from the week.
The Centaurs committed 20 service errors in their loss to the Wolverines early in the week in Jewett City. “If we didn’t have those errors, there is a good chance that we would have won,” Bottone said.
That was evidenced against the Vikings (8-2, 1-0 ECC, Div. I).
The Centaurs (1-2 ECC Div. I) committed only two errors in the first set.
With that consistency, they were able to build the largest margin between the two teams in the set, four points, 21-17.
E. Lyme rallied to tie at 23 but a Vikings service error and a spike out-of-bounds gave Woodstock the 25-23 win.
The Centaurs had three service errors early in the second set, but E. Lyme had four and the Centaurs were able to build a 16-12 lead.
But Woodstock was able to get only one kill the remainder of the way from senior Aurissa Boardman (11 kills in the match) off a set from Annarose Avery (13 assists) and saw the second set get away, 25-21.
The Centaurs would like to wash the third set from their memories as the Vikings rolled, 25-10. Having only eight players dressed played a role in terms of fatigue and the inability to sub for a player who may be having a hard time. In the fourth the Vikings broke out to a 17-3 lead, but the Centaurs rallied. E. Lyme didn’t fold and posted the 25-17 victory to secure the match and make for a nice ride home.
More troubles popped up in the final match of the week against Conard, ranked in the top 10 in the state in several volleyball polls.
Woodstock went into the match missing a key ingredient as Boardman suffered an injury in the loss to E. Lyme and may be out for a while. It meant the Centaurs were back to having just seven players suited up and were also missing their outside hitter.
The Chieftains (11-0) took advantage. Conard won the first set, 25-10, and was even more impressive in the second, winning 25-8. The Centaurs did rally in the third set before falling short, 25-20. Cassidy Chabot had 13 digs in the loss for Woodstock while Gronski added five digs and a pair of aces.
Prep Soccer Falls in Championship Match
The academy’s first-year boys prep soccer program lost in the championship match of the Sportmans/Cardinal Classic Cup to the host school, South Kent, 3-2, Oct. 9. Zach Lorenz scored both goals for the Centaurs, Chaneek Park had an assist.
The team advanced to the championship match with a 2-1 win over Bridgton Academy Oct. 8.
Pablo Vasquez had the game-winning goal off an assist by Tiago Assis and Mario De la Cruz, assisted by Bernardo Fernandes, had the other.
