American Legion
Surprise –
New London
forfeits five
Legion games
By Ron P. Coderre
The big news of the week in American Legion Baseball was the announcement by Zone VI Commissioner John Krot Sr. that New London, which was on top of the Zone standings at 12-0, forfeited five of its 12 victories. The reason wasn’t really surprising. The boys from the Whaling City used an ineligible player.
The verdict, guilty as charged.
Thanks to New London’s indiscretion TriTown and Danielson, which had been swept in their series against NL were awarded victories. The Towners picked up one win, while Danielson was awarded two victories.
On the diamond where the real games are played, TriTown split four games and then dropped two of three with Moosup, Danielson was swept by Jewett City and Moosup lost a pair to Niantic.
TriTown Playing .500 Baseball
TriTown played a three game set against Ledyard-Pawcatuck and came away with two victories. The Towners looking to win games against competition of equal caliber opened the series taking the first game 5-1. TriTown tallied three runs in the opening frame and singletons in the third and fifth in a game played on the road in Stonington. In capturing the opener they took advantage of four L-P errors.
The next evening, at home, TriTown returned the favor by allowing the visiting L-P team to come from behind in the top of the seventh and pull out a 6-5 win. A trio of Towner hurlers couldn’t salvage the win. Ryan Gadoury started but was plagued by a tired arm. Relievers Jared Durand and Alex Angelo were unable to secure the victory. Logan Putnam drove in two of the Towners five runs.
Riding the strong arm of Ellis Tech grad Chuck Innes TriTown won the finale of the series 5-0. Innes allowed just four hits in his route going shutout performance. He helped himself at the plate as he and Kobe Akana each contributed two key hits. Akana and Durand both accounted for two RBI.
Earlier in the week the Towners were stopped cold by Niantic 10-2. The lone bright spot for coach John Foucault’s team was a solo home run by Gadoury.
Over the weekend TriTown and Moosup squared off in a three game. The teams engaged in a doubleheader on Saturday in Thompson at Tourtellotte and split the two contests. TriTown captured the first game 9-5 but allowed Moosup to even the series, losing the second game to Post #91 10-3.
The final game of the set was a 4th of July preview, as David Carpenter provided the fireworks in his team’s 13-9 comeback victory. After being down by seven runs Moosup rallied to pick up the win as Carpenter, who was 4-for-6 with eight RBI, hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The round tripper capped 11 straight runs scored by Moosup. Colby Greenhalgh was 3-for-4 with three RBI for the winners and Steve Jankowski had three hits. Jacob Guertin drove in four runs for 7-8 TriTown, while Angelo chipped in two RBI. Moosup is 3-9 on the season.
Danielson after dropping a 12-8 decision to New London, which was later reversed, dropped a three game set to Jewett City. In the opening 7-2 loss the Recs were dominated by Jewett City hurler Joel Garcia. Sandwiched between the opener and the finale Danielson lost a 3-2 heart breaker. They were limited to only four hits in the loss. The Danielson bats remained silent in the last game of the set, as they were shutout 3-0 by JC. At the close of the week Danielson was 4-5 at the one third mark of the season.
Moosup, which is in the cellar of Zone VI, faced Niantic the top team in the Zone. Niantic disposed of Post #91 in the first game10-0 in a contest called after six innings. In the following contest Moosup was in the game to the end thanks to the pitching of ace Carpenter, who lost by a score of 3-1.
TriTown Juniors Hop Scotching Way Thru Season
The TriTown Jr. Legion entry going through an up-and-down season was blown away by Niantic 10-0. TriTown then lost its next three games and is in a four game slide. In the middle game of the three-game L-P set Tritown lost 10-0 and was dropped 9-3 in the finale. In a Sunday matinee against Niantic the Junior Towners lost 7-4. They are 3-7 on the season.
