Woodstock Academy junior prep player Tre Mitchell was recently recognized by USA Today High School Sports as the Player of the Year in Connecticut boys’ basketball.
“It’s really an honor to have USA Today High School Sports recognize Tre Mitchell as the 2017-18 State Player of the Year. This prestigious honor rarely happens with a junior,” said Woodstock Academy Gold coach Tony Bergeron.
The 6-foot-9, 245-pound native of Pittsburgh led the Woodstock Academy Gold team to the National Prep championship semifinals and to the Power 5 Conference AAA championship.
The Gold team finished with a 35-5 record.
Mitchell has been offered a scholarship by over 30 Division I programs since he arrived on The Woodstock Academy campus.
“The cool part for me is that it opens up opportunities for the rest of the student population. By having college coaches come to campus and talk about The Academy in their schools or in their admissions office, because they were visiting a player here, gets our name out there on as larger scale,” said Head of School Chris Sandford.
Mitchell averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds with two blocks per game in the inaugural season the Woodstock Academy prep program.
Mitchell’s teachers also attested to his hard work and dedication in the classroom as a student-athlete.
Sandford said while The Academy is proud of Mitchell’s achievement, there are many more like him on campus.
“The Academy is made up of students from all over the world. We have 19 different countries and seven different states and local students. We have students on this campus with a variety of talents. We have kids that are talented musically, kids that are talented in something like the Model U.N. program that we have and, like in Tre’s case, the area of athletics. To me, it talks really about what our program is and who we are as an institution in terms of all the programming that we have that allows them to be successful,” said Sandford.
