THOMPSON Rising junior Sydney Masciarelli of Northbridge, Mass., has been named the Gatorade Connecticut Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
Masciarelli was also named the Gatorade Connecticut Girls Cross Country Athlete of the Year this past winter after winning the 2018 Foot Locker Cross Country Championship in December.
She recently added two more national titles to her name at the New Balance Outdoor Track and Field Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. She won the 5k with a time of 16:16.20 which is also a sophomore national record and she won the 2-mile with a time of 10:11.99, winning by an 11 second margin.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes “the nation’s most elite high school athletes for not only athletic excellence, but also for high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character.” Through the Gatorade Play It Forward Initiative, Gatorade will donate $1,000 to a sports-based organization that Sydney will choose.
