POMFRET — The Pomfret field hockey team started the week with a convincing 4-2 victory Oct. 2 at Kingswood-Oxford School in W. Hartford. A goal by freshman Grace Long (assist Genevieve Becker ’20) during extended time gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead at the half. They followed with second half goals by Emma McLean ’22 (assist Hannah Leachman ’20), Cate Gallagher ’22 (assist Brooke Zahansky ’22) and Hannah Twombly ’21 to end the day. Goalie Kayla Shah ’21 recorded the win in the net.
Oct. 5 Pomfret lost a heartbreaker in OT to Ethel Walker (Simsbury) 2-1. Pomfret got on the boards first with an unassisted goal by junior Hannah Twombly. Walkers tied it and after battling for the rest of regulation they headed to the 10-minute 7 v 7 sudden-victory stanza with Walkers earning a penalty stroke to give them the victory when they scored. Pomfret’s record moves to 5-4 on the season.
Last week recognized Pomfret’s 19th year raising money to support Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. Ribbons are sold by the players to members of the community to enjoy a dress down day of denim and pink while every field gets a pink ribbon painted on it by the facilities team. The field hockey squad played this year’s pink game against Walkers.
